Better deal and realianility for Shipping to Asia?

I am trying to ship gift(s) to a friend in Asia.
At destination there is a duty if it exceeds US $30
Does it mean, I only ship one item?
Which carrier is good for this purpose?
DHL gave me more than $100.
PayPal has GlobalShipping for $30 - I do not know which company is this - also unsure if eBay offers it too without any condition such as there was a sale made.
Shipping 1 item only as a gift.
Any tips on shipping it without any errors and minimize the risk of duty!
