Dungeon Crawler Carl is a funny, game-heavy litRPG that shines most for readers who like RPGs, D and D style worlds, and audiobook narration. The series gets praise for Jeff Hayes, strong character voices, and a story that grows more complex and surprising after the early mechanics-heavy setup. The paperback is mainly appealing for physical ownership, while Kindle Unlimited, the audiobook, or the author's Patreon can be cheaper ways in. Early chapters can feel repetitive or tedious, and the humor and game references are not for everyone.

Common Questions (5)

  • The audiobook format is widely favored because Jeff Hayes' narration and character voices add a lot, and some say the series is better listened to than read. The paperback is mainly worth it if you specifically want a physical copy; otherwise Kindle Unlimited or audio is the more practical way to get into the series.

  • The early books lean heavily on RPG mechanics, loot, leveling, and repeated dungeon-fight structure, which can feel tedious or repetitive. Later books are described as building a larger story arc and revealing more behind the scenes, with several readers saying the series improves around books 4-5.

  • The series is available to read with an active Kindle Unlimited membership, and one commenter says a 2-month free KU trial covered books through 7. If you want to avoid Amazon, Matt Dinniman's Patreon reportedly offers ebook downloads for $5/month, though the books are otherwise Amazon-exclusive.

  • Readers mention being on books 6, 7, and 8, and the series is expected to end after two more books. That means it is still ongoing, with the final stretch not yet released.

  • No-this series is not kid-friendly. It includes adult humor, game and internet culture references, and content that several readers describe as juvenile or not suitable for younger readers.

Just finished listening to the third audiobook. Some books are just better to listen to and this is definitely one of them.

My public library has e-books available.

I really like the audiobook versions - and you can get them cheaper when Kindle deals + audiobook happen.

Two nerdy adults review. It's a fun read. Then you'll read book 2. Ok, enjoyable. And then you're good, because the rest of the series is incredibly similar.
Welcome to RPG and Video Games.

i bought all the audiobooks last time this was a deal. been hearing the hype for so long. got halfway through the first book and gave up. it's just a guy narrating a video game. funny for a little while, then its just repetitive. guess this is aimed at the younger generation.

i fully admit to being an outlier, heard from lots of family and friends that I just HAD to read it, or better yet listen to the audiobooks.
I'm 41 and have been really enjoying the series. I like games and I like DND type RPG. It's a fun read for me. If you're not into that stuff...probably 50/50 on whether you'll enjoy.

One of the worst books I've ever read. Wouldn't surprise me to hear that ChatGPT wrote it as it's literally, 'make aliens rewrite the laws of the universe to replace reality with a tropey video game setting, add a bunch of one-note characters, and be sure to include every bad gaming cliche (loot boxes, micro transactions, intrusive ads, etc).
If you think the characters are all one note, you def didn't read, but okay 🖖

Which audiobook version? I think there is a more basic version, and then a more elaborate one with sound effects. (I looked this up a few weeks ago, but forgot the details.)
You want the ones from Audible.

My friend's wife is a librarian. I'm sure you can guess that she reads a lot of books. She was telling all of his friends that they have to read these books. This does not mean that everyone is going to like these books. People have different tastes. But, they're worth a try. I just finished the 4th book myself. Wouldn't have started if I knew there were so many. I'm sure you can guess that I don't read a lot of books!

I wouldn't recommend spending money for the paperback unless someone specifically wants to own the physical book. For getting into the story I would use that money for either a Kindle Unlimited subscription which has the entire series, or get the audiobook which is a must like everyone's saying.

I nearly gave up myself but glad I didn't. I thought the first few books were a little tedious when it was more about the mechanics of the dungeon, different mobs, loot boxes, leveling up etc. He took a while in the world-building and introduction of the different characters who may come into play later. I am now on the fifth book and the larger story arc is really building up and gettin'a lot better.

Even though I see a Jeff Hayes hater here in the thread, this is imo a benchmark example of an audiobook narrator elevating the already great material. I can't imagine how it could be better.

Seems like we get burned by every book adaptation, but I'm still holding on to that last frayed thread of hope. Please, please Macfarlane, don't F this up!!
