Community Reviews
Dungeon Crawler Carl is a funny, game-heavy litRPG that shines most for readers who like RPGs, D and D style worlds, and audiobook narration. The series gets praise for Jeff Hayes, strong character voices, and a story that grows more complex and surprising after the early mechanics-heavy setup. The paperback is mainly appealing for physical ownership, while Kindle Unlimited, the audiobook, or the author's Patreon can be cheaper ways in. Early chapters can feel repetitive or tedious, and the humor and game references are not for everyone.
Common Questions (5)
The audiobook format is widely favored because Jeff Hayes' narration and character voices add a lot, and some say the series is better listened to than read. The paperback is mainly worth it if you specifically want a physical copy; otherwise Kindle Unlimited or audio is the more practical way to get into the series.
The early books lean heavily on RPG mechanics, loot, leveling, and repeated dungeon-fight structure, which can feel tedious or repetitive. Later books are described as building a larger story arc and revealing more behind the scenes, with several readers saying the series improves around books 4-5.
The series is available to read with an active Kindle Unlimited membership, and one commenter says a 2-month free KU trial covered books through 7. If you want to avoid Amazon, Matt Dinniman's Patreon reportedly offers ebook downloads for $5/month, though the books are otherwise Amazon-exclusive.
Readers mention being on books 6, 7, and 8, and the series is expected to end after two more books. That means it is still ongoing, with the final stretch not yet released.
No-this series is not kid-friendly. It includes adult humor, game and internet culture references, and content that several readers describe as juvenile or not suitable for younger readers.

I've played and play a lot of games -- RPGs, FPS, just about everything. I also read just about any type of novel but particularly enjoy Science Fiction and Fantasy. LitRPGs are also a genre I enjoy.
The book is entertaining and generally well-written. It's more complex than one might expect. I understand why people love it and find aspects of it hilarious. However, it is full of juvenile humor and 4chan/Reddit/Fortnite voice chat-type content (and if you're downvoting because of this claim that doesn't change the fact that this claim is true). It had enough of that that I couldn't enjoy it enough to continue through all the books.
I personally listen all through audible though. But there are some text based things that are lost on audio.

I didn't hate them. I didn't really enjoy book 3, but pushed through. Quit halfway through book 4. It's the same gosh darn thing over and over and over and over again. Whole pages of repetitive narration, making sure not to leave one number out. Get in a fight, Carl uses explosives, mana runs low, one of them casts a spell last possible moment to save their skin. Then we spend 5 pages opening treasures from the fight. Rinse. Repeat.
I played D&D growing up. I still play RPG games old and new. It still wasn't for me.
