Dungeon Crawler Carl is a funny, game-heavy litRPG that shines most for readers who like RPGs, D and D style worlds, and audiobook narration. The series gets praise for Jeff Hayes, strong character voices, and a story that grows more complex and surprising after the early mechanics-heavy setup. The paperback is mainly appealing for physical ownership, while Kindle Unlimited, the audiobook, or the author's Patreon can be cheaper ways in. Early chapters can feel repetitive or tedious, and the humor and game references are not for everyone.

  • Kindle Unlimited access can let you read the series without buying each paperback separately.

  • Audiobooks can deliver the character voices and improve pacing past early RPG mechanics explanations.

  • The story can build into a larger arc that improves after the early dungeon mechanics focus.

  • Some listeners find the audiobooks legitimately funny with strong pop-culture references and escalating insanity.

  • The early books can feel tedious due to lengthy RPG mechanics explanations and slower world-building.

  • The series can become repetitive for some readers, with repeated fight and treasure patterns.

  • Some audiobook listeners dislike Donut's voice performance and feel it misses the mark.

  • Some readers criticize the premise and writing for leaning into gaming tropes like loot boxes, microtransactions, and intrusive ads.

I'll offer a different perspective on this book than what many are saying here.

I've played and play a lot of games -- RPGs, FPS, just about everything. I also read just about any type of novel but particularly enjoy Science Fiction and Fantasy. LitRPGs are also a genre I enjoy.

The book is entertaining and generally well-written. It's more complex than one might expect. I understand why people love it and find aspects of it hilarious. However, it is full of juvenile humor and 4chan/Reddit/Fortnite voice chat-type content (and if you're downvoting because of this claim that doesn't change the fact that this claim is true). It had enough of that that I couldn't enjoy it enough to continue through all the books.

Way better than you would think given any description you'd read.

I personally listen all through audible though. But there are some text based things that are lost on audio.

One of the worst books I've ever read. Wouldn't surprise me to hear that ChatGPT wrote it as it's literally, 'make aliens rewrite the laws of the universe to replace reality with a tropey video game setting, add a bunch of one-note characters, and be sure to include every bad gaming cliche (loot boxes, micro transactions, intrusive ads, etc).
I'm so excited for when every statement of disagreement or distaste comes back to AI playing a role. AI bad, got it.

Audio / book is mid. You might as well play a videogame instead which is a better use of time. Nothing special here.

The books really are that good. I'm on my second listen through. The audiobooks are the best format, but the books are great to have too.

I've come here to just say that this book is awesome. If you're on the fence just buy it. Audiobook is where the real magic is though. I recommend buying the first book there so you get all of the characters voices in your head and then reading.
100% agree. It has raised the bar for what I thought an audiobook could be.

i bought all the audiobooks last time this was a deal. been hearing the hype for so long. got halfway through the first book and gave up. it's just a guy narrating a video game. funny for a little while, then its just repetitive. guess this is aimed at the younger generation.i fully admit to being an outlier, heard from lots of family and friends that I just HAD to read it, or better yet listen to the audiobooks.
As a non-gamer, I completely feel the same way. I guess I understand the appeal, but there are too many game-related references that it became confusing very quickly. Luckily, I only purchased the first book and audiobook. The narrator does a great job, but the content/plot isn't for everyone.

I'll disagree. Book 4 is peak. The parade is where they jump the shark a bit. However there's only 9 books, so am expecting 9 to tie things off
Did that change recently because I though book 9 was getting cut into two parts and then a 10th book?

Dude I'm 43 and listen to the audiobooks and they are legitimately funny, reference good pop culture and just continue to get even more insane. You actually care about each character and each floors NPC's

Two nerdy adults review. It's a fun read. Then you'll read book 2. Ok, enjoyable. And then you're good, because the rest of the series is incredibly similar.
bruh there is a huge difference between book 2 and lets say book 5. Dont listen to this guy the books gets progressively great

I didn't hate them. I didn't really enjoy book 3, but pushed through. Quit halfway through book 4. It's the same gosh darn thing over and over and over and over again. Whole pages of repetitive narration, making sure not to leave one number out. Get in a fight, Carl uses explosives, mana runs low, one of them casts a spell last possible moment to save their skin. Then we spend 5 pages opening treasures from the fight. Rinse. Repeat.

I played D&D growing up. I still play RPG games old and new. It still wasn't for me.

Even though I see a Jeff Hayes hater here in the thread, this is imo a benchmark example of an audiobook narrator elevating the already great material. I can't imagine how it could be better.Seems like we get burned by every book adaptation, but I'm still holding on to that last frayed thread of hope. Please, please Macfarlane, don't F this up!!
Literally! Read the entire series then started over with the audiobooks because I was hooked. By far the most impressive narration I've heard - the guy is a genius

This offer is like offering the 'first hit for free'. If you buy this book, you might as well order the next 7 because it's addictive as hell. Creative and fantastic. With that said, the audiobooks are incredible.
