Yeah I'm in the market for one too but prices are just not good right now. I believe the down votes are because of the inflation. I appreciate that people are looking out for better prices for us but we also need to look at the reality that this drive was around $120 2 years ago.

Prices should be below that, but they're not. The last time I bought an external drive was in 2016 and it was a 2tb WD element for $49.

This is one of the lower price per TB drives I've seen over the past 6 months, unfortunately. Used NVMe drives are still going for $100 or more on eBay. For a new USB 2TB, this is probably as good as you'll find right now. Also, these newer Sandisk USB drives are an all-in-one board, so they can't be shucked.

The good news is the prices have clearly stabilized, the same as I've seen most of the year since at least March. That's usually a sign demand is finally being met, or demand destruction is keeping consumers from buying. Either way, when production is increasing and demand has stabilized, what usually follows is a price collapse, at least historically. If new production indeed comes online over the next 6 months from Micron, Samsung and YMTC like they've been saying for the past year, there is a strong chance these prices will begin falling by mid-2027.

Walmart has a Sandisk 1TB for $125, so this deal is a good price. I was at Costco, had the item cardboard in my cart, but decided to put it back, since I didn't really need it.

Storage prices will not fall for at least 2 more years. There are only 2.5 (sorry Toshiba) HDD makers - WD and Seagate are the others. Their capacity for 2027 is already sold out, and ST/WD are making companies sign long term commitments on drives now to get preferred supply. Since so many cloud (not AI but cloud) makers need storage, they are having to buy NAND (the chips that make SSDs) instead of HDD. That's what is driving the price of storage up. If it is a price you can stomach, I'd buy it. That's what I have done on a couple of deals recently - paid $229 for what I paid $100 for. I am not expecting good deals for Prime Day or Black Friday this year. The only way this will change is if we get more capacity online (a little memory capacity is coming on but it is going to AI memory) - the next plant I know of is around 2030. I expect there will be some shakeout it AI companies by then. I'm also going to have a long memory Sandisk - as to how you are gouging consumers now - please explain why a 4TB Gen 5 drive has gone from $350 to $1999 in less than 12 months?

The cost of memory has gone up because of the demand from AI data centers needing extremely large amounts of computing power and memory!

Yeah it's unfortunate but storage prices just keep going up. I bought this in December 2024 at Costco. It was 129.99 with $20 coupon at that time.
