This refurbished ASUS ZenWiFi BD5 3 pack is a low cost WiFi 7 mesh kit aimed at whole home coverage, with strong value versus buying new. The dual 2.5G Ethernet ports and free lifetime security features add flexibility, and the price is especially compelling for three nodes. The main tradeoffs are that it is dual band, has no 6 GHz radio, and only two ports per node, so wireless backhaul and wired device plans need to fit that design. It looks best for simpler homes or fully wired setups where the savings matter most.

Common Questions (5)

  • It can work fully wirelessly for lighter internet use, but dual-band mesh is less ideal than tri-band because client traffic and backhaul share the same radios. Wired backhaul is the better setup if you want lower congestion and latency, especially with multiple hops or heavier internal traffic.

  • No. 6 GHz is optional for Wi‑Fi 7, and many devices cannot use it or won't see much benefit from it; the main gains are features like MLO, seamless band switching, and better interference handling. It can still help in dense areas or for wireless backhaul, where the extra band flexibility matters.

  • Each BD5 node has two 2.5Gb Ethernet ports, so the 3-pack gives you six ports total across the kit. That is fewer ports per node than older ASUS mesh kits like the XT8, so it is best if you do not need lots of wired devices on each unit.

  • Yes, the price is unusually low for three Wi‑Fi 7 mesh nodes, especially compared with what similar routers cost new or even what a single router cost in 2021. The tradeoff is refurbished condition, a one-year third-party warranty, and a lower-end dual-band design.

  • Yes, but firmware matters. Newer ASUS units on 3.0.0.6.* can distribute guest Wi‑Fi across nodes, while older 3.0.0.4.* devices may limit mesh broadcasting to the main network, which can complicate IoT and guest-network setups until everything is upgraded.

This is an insane deal, I think I paid $150 for a single one like 6 months ago. I guess it's important to point out that I have an ethernet backhaul so the dual-band vs tri-band debate doesn't apply to me.

If you knew, then you shouldn't be disappointed that they "reduced the number of ports". Because they didn't.
Comparing the two routers, ASUS absolutely did reduce the number of ports.

ASUS XT8: One 2.5GB Port, 3 1GB Ports. 1 + 3 = 4 total ports
ASUS BD5: Two 2.5GB Ports. 2 total ports.

Not following your point. 2 is less than 4. Less ports. The BD5 has fewer ports. And I don't like that ASUS reduced the number of ports.

If you haven't used an ASUS mesh system before, be aware that their app is absolutely terrible. They update it frequently, but it hasn't improved over time. It's slow, it doesn't save settings, sometimes settings just erase themselves, it sometimes won't connect when you are on your own LAN, and it very frequently won't connect when you are outside of your LAN, even if you've configured it correctly for remove access.

ASUS mesh systems don't handle IPv6 very well at all (I just had to disable it).

One more thing that's particularly annoying regarding their parental controls: if you add any device to a group (so that internet access can be switched on and off according to a schedule), even if you specifically don't apply any DNS filtering, it still somehow applies the filtering and results in either no internet access or restricted access.

I'll never buy an ASUS mesh system again.
I have a different experience with the app. It saves settings.

I agree ASUS isn't perfect. Since you wouldn't buy ASUS again, what would you recommend?

I paid more than this for one single router back in 2021. Three nodes of wifi 7 for 150, even dual band, is wild to me. Half my stuff cannot see 6ghz anyway.

Thanks for this link, I wouldn't buy it refurb at this price, but I wouldn't buy it period because it's dual band unless you will go 100% wired backhaul. I've been told multiple times triband for wireless backhaul.. Been waiting to replace my crappy tplink deco X55 mesh system... Even wired backhaul my cameras don't connect easily on 2.4ghz.. Something is off with tplink.

The BD5 is not the WiFi 7 version of the XT8. The BT8 is. The BD5 is the WiFi 7 version of the XD5. You are comparing completely different products at completely different price points.

The BD5 never had extra Ethernet ports to take away, its predecessor only had two as well. If you want your 4 ports, get a BT8.

Thank you for the additional explanation! I agree.

This only applies for higher internet speeds. It can do 500 Mbps just fine on dual band.

And yes, TP-Link is not to be trusted. I personally wouldn't even use one I got for free.
