Such an awesome game! Created by the same people that made the Persona games. Similar combat and systems but better in my opinion. The story is great and the graphics are awesome. Not to mention the absolute banger of a soundtrack. I still hum the main song from time to time.

I ask this question whenever I see this deal because I have it in my backlog, but no one has seemed to be able to answer: I like certain aspects of Persona 5, like the interesting characters and story, but I didn't like its punishing length and a lot of the tedium, like doing laundry, going to the movies, etc. Is this game better in that regard?

I'm interested in this game, but would rather play it handheld as that works better for me for these types of games. Then I can lay in bed and knock out an hour a night or whatever.

FYI, it's coming out on Switch 2 in November and the retail price (physical or digital) is only $40. If anyone is on the fence, it will probably be this price on Switch 2 within a year.

Metaphor significantly cuts down on the mundane, real-world chores that slowed Persona 5 to a crawl.
  • No More Chores: You won't be doing laundry, brewing coffee, clean tables, or taking shifts at a convenience store.
  • Purposeful Downtime: When you spend time on daily activities, they feel much more epic and tied to the main plot. Instead of sitting in a movie theater to boost a stat, you are giving political speeches on a podium to gain "Eloquence," or debating rival politicians in public squares.
  • The Gauntlet Runner: Travel between cities takes place on a massive, mechanical land-ship. During these trips, your "downtime" is spent cooking stat-boosting meals with your crew, reading books to learn about the world, or bonding with your party members. It feels like a high-stakes road trip rather than an artificial time-sink.
2. Game Length and Pacing
While the pacing is much tighter, the overall length is still quite formidable.
  • Still a Massive RPG: Metaphor: ReFantazio is not a short game. A standard playthrough will still take you roughly 70 to 85 hours.
  • Better Combat Pacing: One major saving grace for the length is the hybrid combat system. In Persona 5, running into a low-level enemy meant sitting through a transition screen, fighting a trivial battle, and watching a victory screen. In Metaphor, if an enemy is lower level than you, you can instantly defeat them in real-time on the overworld map with a single button press. This saves dozens of hours of unnecessary grinding and combat fatigue over the course of the game.
The Verdict
If you loved the stellar characters, stylish UI, and engaging story of Persona 5, but hated feeling like you were managing a virtual teenager's calendar of chores, you will likely enjoy Metaphor much more. The time management is streamlined, the filler is replaced with rich world-building, and the combat respects your time. Just be prepared that it is still a grand, 70+ hour fantasy epic.

Weird game. Protagonist looks fruity af. Wears tights, girly haircut, tiara, and a purse. oh and hes a guy.
