There is only a single rubber "button" that forms the seal and a simple lever mechanism for opening. Not a bunch of o-rings and other junk like some other brands have. I love my Zojirushi but having to disassemble the rubber o-ring, rubber "nipple" and other parts of the cap and clean them all is a big pain and they eventually build up residue that can't be removed.
The seal is mostly open to the air which seems to prevent residue unlike my Zojirushi where the parts are inside the cap and seem to cause buildup much quicker since they aren't as well insulated.
