If you see this mic and have the instinct to walk over and tap on it, don't. The audio engineer would be fully justified in using an XLR cable to strangle you for using your grubby mitts to rough up their hyper-precise recording tool. Variable pattern condensers are cool because they can adjust to multiple recording situations (quieter vocal, yelling lead singer, acoustic instrument plus vocals, small multipiece orchestra or choir) with just a switch of the pickup pattern.
