The CF 70 towers come across as a crisp, open sounding pair that excels at instrument separation and clear vocal placement, especially with Audyssey tuning. They can fill a small to medium room with strong output, and pairing them with a sub brings the low end closer to full range. The main tradeoff is that the bass does not reach true sub bass punch on its own, so a dedicated sub may still be needed for the deepest kick drum impact. A matching Energy center is also suggested for home theater use.

  • The CF-70 towers can deliver crisp sound with a more open soundstage when paired with an Audyssey-tuned Denon AVR.

  • The CF-70 towers can make it easier to pick out individual instruments and place voices during playback.

  • The CF-30 experience with a JBL 550P sub through an Audyssey-equipped receiver produced great sound in a small-to-medium living room.

  • A center-channel upgrade can improve TV and movie dialogue performance when building an LCR setup around these speakers.

  • The CF-70 towers may sound less warm and may deliver less sub-bass punch than expected without adding a .1 subwoofer channel.

  • The CF-70 towers can fall short of party-speaker deep bass impact for kick-drum style live-rock realism without additional low-end boosting.

  • Older Energy speakers may require capacitor recapping depending on whether the production is new and what capacitor types were used.

  • Using a non-matching center speaker can limit home-theater dialogue output, which may reduce the benefit of pairing towers with the wrong center.

How do you like them? Have you compared with any other floor standers?

I got the CF30s the other month for half this price ($150). Are the CF100s significantly better?

Didn't do a lot of direct comparison but I replaced some old Kenwood floorstanders that were more deep woofer-mid-high vs the multi-mid-array these offer. Running through an Audyssey-tuned Denon AVR, the sound is crisp and soundstage far more open, much easier to pick out individual instruments and place voices. Music isn't quite as warm but I'll take high end vocal clarity without tinniness any day. Haven't fully opened them up as they're still in the break-in period but running at about half the amp's capacity per channel (or a quarter of the speakers' rated wattage) is enough to rumble my basement walls without needing an additional LFE channel, though these don't quite hit that sub-bass punch and you may want that .1 for truly full range feel.

I don't understand how my JBL partybox 120 has way better deep bass response than the couple pairs highly reviewed and kinda pricey (in their day) tower speakers I have. I have a set of NEAR 50me from the 90's and a pair of KEF iq90 that are like 20 years old. The Nears have better bass but both pale in comparison to the partybox. I am a lifelong audio nut (prefer not to be lumped in with the "audiophile" crowd) and have a decent understanding of audio and speakers. Never understood the explanation "If you don't listen to pipe organs you don't need response below 40hz for music". That has never made sense to me. I like to try to recreate live rock music where the kick drum sounds like an m80 going off and you either need huge speakers or a sub to accomplish this. Unless you have a partybox LOL. I am seriously considering getting a 2nd one to play in stereo. Sure imaging and midrange clarity, fatigue etc etc will not be perfect but as I age I'm pretty sure my ears are typically the weak link in those regards. I have a music hall maven receiver with no tape loop so I can't even add an eq to my living room system. Maybe I'll try an eq between the preouts and an external power amp. For those of you not in the know, the partybox has two 5.25 inch woofers. Make this make sense. Punchier deeper dare I say clean and fast bass with great attack/ transients to creep into audiophile vocabulary. I want to blindfold one of my audiophile friends and see what he thinks.

Weren't these Energy speakers manufactured some 20 years ago? Wouldn't the capacitors be compromised by now?

Or is this new production?

Those party speakers have a built in amp with a DSP, which basically applies heavy EQ to boost the low end. You could accomplish similar thing with passive speakers if you applied enough EQ using an external equalizer.

I don't know, I'd be up against hitting the excursion limit on the woofers as well as sending them a clipped signal. The near brand speakers I have do sound incredible overall and their spiderless woofers have not been available as replacement parts for about a decade or so. I'd have to buy a donor or replacement pair of if I were to fry them. I guess the party box is a wonderful example of class D amplification and dsp done right. James B Lansing would be proud.

Thanks OP. Your title still shows 299 for some reason. You might want to update it to 249.

my understanding is that you want a dedicated sub with the CF30s. I pulled the trigger on the CF30s and use a JBL 550P (?) through an older Devon receiver with audyssey. The sound is great for my small to medium size living room. Very happy with the purchase.

they debuted in 2008 and were discontinued in 2013 according to google ai. Funny you brought this up, I've been wanting to recap my mid 90's speakers for a while. Supposedly film caps can last 30-50 years, electrolytic only 20 years and that's not even taking the electrolytic cap plaque back in the early 2000's into account. Bring out your caps! Lol.

Yeah, so "brand new" speakers that may need to be recapped right away.

Has anyone bought these and can comment on how they sound? Maybe the whole recap thing is a big nothing burger?

No, they have not been rotting in a warehouse for the last +20 years. Who would be dumb enough to pay through the nose for THAT, and then resell them this cheaply?

Google:
"Energy speakers are currently part of Premium Audio Company, LLC, under the Klipsch Group brand portfolio. Premium Audio Company was formerly owned by VOXX International, which was acquired by Gentex Corporation in April 2025. Thus, the ultimate current owner is Gentex."
