This Brother DCP-L2640DW refurb is a compact black and white laser all in one that stands out for reliable home office printing, scanning, and automatic duplex printing. Long term use points to solid Wi Fi, easy setup with standard Windows drivers, and low running costs when using cheap third party toner. The starter toner is about 600 pages, and replacement toner can be far cheaper than Brother OEM supplies. The main gaps are no duplex scanning and no direct scan to USB flash drive, with ARM support also limited for scanning. A practical pick if you want a basic workhorse rather than every AIO feature.
Home offices printing invoices, envelopes, and documents, because it has reliable Wi‑Fi, automatic duplex printing, and long-term low-cost toner use.
Small offices that print a lot of black-and-white pages, because standard drivers work well and the printer can run for years with cheap third-party toner.
Buyers replacing an inkjet with a simpler monochrome workhorse, because toner lasts far longer than ink and the printer can keep running for years with few replacements.
Yes, third-party toner has been used with no issue on this model, and Brother B&W MFC/DCP printers are often paired with generic cartridges. Reported toner prices on Amazon or eBay are about $15-$20, though OEM drum and toner can be much more expensive.
It has been used successfully for years for home office tasks like printing envelopes, scanning documents, and printing invoices. Long-term owners also report solid Wi‑Fi and low-cost ownership, with standard Windows printing working fine.
Yes, it supports automatic duplex printing for printing on both sides of the paper. It does not have duplex scanning, so two-sided documents must be scanned one side at a time and combined afterward if needed.
No, this model does not support direct scan to a USB flash drive. That feature is reportedly reserved for higher-end Brother models, so it matters if you want standalone scanning without a computer.
I reported expired because Amazon is showing higher price. Brother will not let me checkout normally, however I was able to use Google Pay without issue.
Fyi... I have been through 3 of these printers at my work. Its cheaper to buy the entire printer than replace drum/toner...
Drum costs $170
Toner costs $82
I didn't have this brand laser printer but laser printers are workhorses. The last one I had was 20years old and going strong. I only replaced it because I needed a color printer. Generic toners worked great and lasted years before needing to be replaced.
Generic supplies are the way to go. But if you want to get rid of one, I'll take it!
This is not really an insightful observation. Printers are priced at a loss to make money on ink. New laser jets are sold with cartridges that have a fraction of the amount of ink as a replacement cartridge but even then it's not nearly as bad as inkjets which are basically given away for free so you buy their incredibly marked up tiny carts.
That $82 toner will last 4x or more than the one that comes with the printer and many laser jets live out their useful life not needing a new drum.
Yes, the Brother DCP-L2640DW supports automatic duplex printing. This feature allows it to print on both sides of the paper, helping to save resources.
Someone always remarks that it doesn't support duplex scanning. It's very easy to scan a two sided document, first one side and then the other, and combine them with freeware pdf software. The HP Officejet Pro I used to have would do duplex scanning but also jammed frequently.
