5" version of this model has been driving my wife crazy (with its bugs, irrelevant responses or just completely ignoring her), so it was time to upgrade
Took advantage of the 20% trade-in to drop it below $100.

Throwing good money after bad? What makes you think a newer device fixes those problems?

I had one of these and unplugged it after a long time of it just sitting there showing nothing useful on the screen. I bought it to be a screen for Ring doorbell, but it didn't connect 90% of the time and the times it did work, it was so slow, the person had left by the time it showed the camera image. And then the rest of the time were irrelevant news stories, ads for other skills, or the straw that broke the camel's back, ads for grocery items. Literally one of the most useless and cheapest feeling tech products I've owned in a while.

I wouldn't spend money without troubleshooting. I have an 11" and 8" versions in different rooms. Replaced the 5" with the 8" in the bedroom, and all the problems went away. It's a hardware limitation of the 5" version.

I think Echo Shows were a much better value when Amazon was practically selling them at a loss to get more people into the Echo ecosystem. Over time, they've increasingly become billboards on your kitchen counter rather than the useful smart displays they were originally intended to be. Amazon already offers Fire tablets at reduced prices with ads, so I don't see why they can't offer the same option with Echo Shows. I love my first-generation Echo Show 8, but I also paid just $40 for it, which I think was a great deal. I understand that the newer models have improved, but when you're paying $100 or more and dealing with an increasing number of ads, I have a hard time justifying the price. At some point, the added features simply don't make up for the declining user experience.
