Icon's G2 generation of ratchets are actually excellent quality units. I own a few different sized units.

I personally prefer the Gearwrench 120xp series of ratchets when I work on my cars, but my brother who is a professional mechanic at a diesel truck shop prefers the Icon G2 ratchets. Since he turns wrenches (and ratchets I guess) 6 days a week I guess I have to trust his personal experience with the tools.

TTC on youtube also tested these G2 ratchets and some examples outperformed the significantly more expensive Snap-Ons.

Would there be any benefit in getting the flex and non flex versions or would the flex be the better option for someone not using these full time?

locking flex is my recommendation. Non locking flex can drive you crazy, but not as crazy as not having a flex head.

$78 for the 26" locking flex seems high to me still.
Am i missing something about this (besides the flex head) that makes it more valuable than a breaker bar?

This brand of tools imo is over priced for avg diy er. This brand is said to be designed to rival Snap On which is oookuu boooku priced high but tool nuts still buy them.

If you're an auto tech by trade, these tools make sense but for a diyer that does a few projects a year, you can get away with lower priced brands.

I have the Icon Razor Scraper as well as an Icon flash light. They're great and very well built but the half priced cheaper flash light gets me by just the same..

If I happen to be in the area, I might pick up a single $18 stubby for fun. Who knows, maybe I'll use it one day lol.

Does anyone have a link to that Subaru mechanic who frequently points out cheaper tools that are seemingly identical to the Icons?

I think you're referring to "Mr Subaru." You can find him fairly easily on YouTube under the same (and yes, he is an ex Snap-On dealer that liked to stick it to Matco by showing how Matco doesn't make - almost - any of their own tools).

Setting aside the "ICON is overpriced" rhetoric, where else are you finding a 26" locking flex head for under $80? A 26" ratchet is going to be expensive. I own an 18" Ko-Ken flex head that I bought around the same price after a Zoro 20% coupon, but it wasn't locking, it didn't have a cushion grip handle, and it's 8" shorter with an inferior warranty. This is a fairly close copy of the Snap-On locking flex, but Snap-on may have a patented lock mechanics which HFT couldn't copy... regardless, that ratchet is over $330 + shipping. The closest thing you'll find at this quality level/size/warranty is probably the largest Gearwrench locking flex head... they have a dual material 2 ft long locking flex head in 1/2" for over $130 at Home Depot ( https://www.homedepot.com/p/GEARW...-US&fp=ggl ).

Thanks. That's the guy. Looks like he actually liked the G2 Icon ratchets, though rips on them for copying the designs of others.

In this video he says that the head design is like Snap-Ons and the locking flex handle is like Matcos. So it's a mishmash. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0muaOxR9GSw

Yeah, he refers to them as "Hobo Freight." As you can imagine, Harbor Freight is a sore subject with many independent Snappy dealers who have watched HFT copy (practically clone) a whole bunch of Snap-On's stuff and then sell it wayyyy cheaper with a no-hassle warranty (at least on their hand tools, that is). I mentioned above to that other guy that I think Snap-On patented that locking flex mechanism they use. The HFT ICON copies out of Taiwan mostly copy the Snap-On 26" locking flex ratchet, but have to settle for the non-patented (or patent expired) designs used by Matco and Gearwrench. Btw, I do own a 1/4" locking flex head Snap-On ratchet and a 3/8" locking Matco ratchet. The Matco is crazy expensive at retail pricing. I thought about running out to grab this G2 locking flex at $78, but with my 18" Ko-ken and my 24" and 30" breaker bars, I had to question if it was really worth purchasing given all the damn space it will take up in the garage.
