This is a direct thermal shipping label printer aimed at small businesses that print a lot of packages. The labels are reported to look good and the printer is easy to use, and the Bluetooth setup can be bypassed with a continuously running server for AirPrint style printing. The main drawbacks are durability and compatibility concerns, since direct thermal labels can fade with heat and time, the roll size may not fit UPS rolls, and the connection can drop after a few hours. A practical pick if you want simple shipping labels and can live with the format limits.

Common Questions (4)

  • Yes, direct thermal labels can fade because heat changes the print. They are best for temporary shipping labels or other uses that won't be exposed to much heat; for long-lasting, UV-resistant labels, thermal transfer is the better choice.

  • It can be a good fit for a small business that ships a lot, but some shoppers prefer used Zebra ZP450/ZP500 or other thermal printers for better reliability and broader roll compatibility. If you want a cheaper alternative, there are also thermal printers around $35 without the LCD screen.

  • It uses direct thermal labels, and the rolls are described as standardized rather than proprietary. The main compatibility concern raised is physical roll size: the printer's roll compartment may be too small for some UPS rolls.

  • It can lose its PC connection after a few hours and may need to be power-cycled to reconnect. A workaround is to turn it off when finished, and AirPrint-style use is possible if you keep a server running all the time.

the roll it accepts seems really small and doesn't fit the ups rolls. you're better off buying a used ZP450 or 500 off offerup for $50-60, those things are workhorses

Do all thermal printer labels fade with time? Are there decent label printers that don't have that issue?

i think its just the nature of the product. heat based printing. i think they are designed for temporary shipping label and/or someplace where it doesnt get hot

You want thermal transfer instead of direct thermal.

I have a few old TLP2844 printers that are still working perfectly after 10 years with me. I bought them used from a medical office when they upgraded.

I'm sure newer models exist.

I am certain that they stick it to you with the proprietary "Thermal Paper"

The thermal paper rolls are standardized. They will stick it to you when the no-name company no longer supports the latest version of iOS or Android 5 years from now, or it turns out their dodgy app has been secretly reading your pokemon fanfic. Get yourself a Brother, buy once cry once.

These do. Heat turns them. If you want labels to last a long time and be UV resistant you need a direct transfer label. They have two ribbons. Your label itself and the ribbon that is transferred on top.

Zebra has been doing commercial printers for years and they have quite a bit of IP and engineering experience.

This is direct thermal, which sucks in general. You will need special thermal paper / labels with it. I would NOT use this for anything that requires durability. You need a thermal transfer printer which actually requires an ink ribbon. But they can print on really durable material like vinyl which direct thermal cannot.

You can make these AirPrint available if you have a server running all the time. Rather than having to use BT and the labellife app for every job.

Vibecoded drivers are already emerging that end the Brother tax on that subject.
