This open box Dell XPS stands out for its premium build, backlit keyboard, and 13.4 inch QHD plus 120 hertz IPS touch display, making it appealing for light productivity and media. The Core 5 320 and fast LPDDR5 storage setup are framed as enough for everyday office work, browsing, and streaming at this price. The main concern is the 8GB RAM, which is repeatedly described as tight on Windows 11 and prone to high memory use or sluggishness. The fair open box condition also makes the value harder to justify for heavier workloads, a better fit for modest use than demanding multitasking.

  • The deal price is argued to be more reasonable than paying above $600, especially for light office work and media consumption.

  • The XPS chassis and keyboard are described as premium-feeling and backlit, which can improve everyday typing comfort.

  • The 1600p 120Hz IPS touch display is described as hard to find at this price, which can make media use feel smoother.

  • The Core 5 320 is described as more power-efficient than older higher-wattage comparisons, which can help justify the open-box configuration.

  • The 8GB RAM configuration is criticized as insufficient for Windows 11 workloads, with reports of high RAM usage and stuttering during video calls.

  • Dell is criticized for pairing a premium-feeling build with only 8GB RAM, which can undermine the overall experience for buyers expecting a more complete spec set.

  • The laptop is reported to idle at about 85% RAM utilization right after boot, which can leave little headroom for multitasking.

  • The Core 5 320 is criticized as weak for the asking value, with a benchmark comparison to an older i3-class CPU and concerns about component value.

I don't think people realize how much RAM Windows 11 (and Microsoft products) use these days. Even 16GB isn't enough for casual use at my work.

My work laptop averages 12~14GB of RAM usage with Firefox, Microsoft Teams, and Outlook open. It still stutters and has performance issues during video call meetings. Task manager reports 100% ram usage.

I want IT support to give me a laptop with at least 24GB of ram so I wont have to close applications before meetings.

This thing idles on the desktop right from boot at 85% RAM utilization. Physical feel and build of the machine is top notch though.

Frankly, I think it's irresponsible for Dell to offer an otherwise premium laptop with 8gb of RAM in 2026. Either make a budget laptop or make a premium laptop. It's like a Lexus without AC. Everything else can feel premium but it's just not going to be a comfortable drive on a summer day.

Dell makes both. Other XPS laptops are premium (and very, very, expensive).

Some of the reviewers say 8GB will be fine for most uses...I've looked at at least 3-4 so far

If Apple can get away with the Neo having 8GB RAM and selling like hotcakes then so can this XPS which is its direct rival.
A lot of things are being overlooked and need to be taken into factor. Firstly, it's an XPS which means superb build quality and keyboard (which is backlit unlike the Neo), to start with. Secondly a 1600p 120Hz IPS Touch display which is now impossible to be found at this price. You may find a product (probably a refurb) offering either of these at this price but not all of these things together. Just like the Neo was aimed towards students and your general consumers, so is this. Anyone looking for a laptop to do some light productivity on as well as consume media and also without sacrificing esthetics and build quality, would be happy with this purchase.
I used a Intel 11th Gen 8GB QHD+ IPS Acer Spin 3 for 3-4 years (that I bought for $750 in 2022), opening multiple windows, posting deals here on SD, making presentations, word documents, etc., and it served me perfectly without any hiccups until the battery gave out and I had to switch to a different one at the start of this year.
As long one knows their use case scenario and are practical with their requirements, this laptop/deal can and will serve one well mainly because there isn't any other device at the moment around this price that can.

When it comes to memory, you can't compare 2 laptops of different OS. How macOS handles memeory is different than how Windows handle it, thus the memory requirement is different.
If this was an Android device, 8gb of memory is fine for most use cases and 16gb is super premium for the power users. With Windows it is completely different.

I have a very light Windows laptop with 8gb of memory. I can still use it as a travel laptop but I basically use it for about 1-4 tabs on Chrome and that's about it. Even then it is quite sluggish. I can't imagine buying a new laptop over $500 to have the same sluggish experience.

As for Apple, well that's not a fair comparison. Besides it being a different OS like I stated above, there are other factors:
1. The rest of their laptops are much more expensive than comparable Windows units.
2. The Neo thus becomes their least expensive unit (and the least expensive way for people to buy an Apple laptop). There are far cheaper Windows laptops than this XPS with 8gb.
3. It's Apple. They can basically do anything they want and sheeps (I mean people) will buy it. Dell and Windows does not have that marketing power.

Let's put it this way. Be honest, are you seriously considering buying this for yourself or family member? Be honest. Pretty sure the answer is no.

I know they make both. But they should stick premium specs with the premium laptops, not budget specs on premium build. If they want to make 8gb laptops, then stick it in a dell plastic build inspiron for $300-350.

Everything you have stated regarding MacBooks, and their RAM management is spot on, and I do not refute it one bit. However, stating that 1-4 chrome tabs make your 8GB laptop sluggish is a bit misleading. My previous laptop that I mentioned, I used to have 10-12 Microsoft Edge tabs open on it at all times and it never lagged or felt sluggish despite having 8GB RAM and i5-1135G7. This here has a better processor and faster RAM and storage; I am sure it can handle a few more tabs than 4.
More importantly, as far as your last question goes. Yes, I will definitely consider this laptop for my family member, or even myself (had I not bought a new laptop at the start of this year), if I know that this would only be used for the usual office work, emails, web browsing, media consumption; because imo there isn't a laptop out there as of now that would do all those things better than this here at this current price. The MRSP of course i ridiculous, and this above $600 would be less of an option then.

Sounds like something is misconfigured on your unit. How many tabs on Firefox do you usually have open? Have you tried switching to a different browser to see if that makes any difference? I usually have more things than you described above on my 16GB laptop and I'm not struggling all that much or at all. I do have all the crapware from Microsoft such as the widgets and such disabled.

Our minimum config is 24GB RAM at work. Before the memory crunch I was ordering everything with 32GB RAM. My laptop is one of the oldest so it only has 16GB but it's been fine for my workflow. Granted, it's a Mac. I plan to order a new one for myself when the M6 MacBook Pros are released.
