This Phomemo D421R is a compact thermal shipping label printer aimed at faster daily label printing, especially when compared with taping paper labels or dealing with toner and cutting. The built in label bin and roll storage are appealing for keeping labels inside the machine, and thermal printing avoids ink. The main drawbacks are the lack of Wi Fi, which limits remote packing workflows, and the LCD and percentage display feel more like a gimmick than a must have. Auto detection and the paper level display also depend on Phomemo RFID labels, so the convenience features are tied to specific supplies.

Common Questions (5)

  • One workable method is to print on regular paper and attach it with glue stick or packing tape. Another option is self-adhesive label paper, but that can require driver and page-layout setup for each vendor.

  • Yes, 4x6 labels are a common fit for thermal shipping workflows, and the printer is aimed at that use case. It can reduce the time and mess of toner, cutting, and taping compared with printing labels on paper.

  • The printer appears limited to rolls that fit inside the machine, so large UPS rolls may not work directly. For bigger formats, a label stand or a printer that can pass folded labels is the practical workaround.

  • The LCD mainly shows roll remaining, not a precise live print-progress indicator. The percentage display can look gimmicky because the label is already visibly feeding out of the printer.

  • Yes. Auto-detection of label dimensions and the real-time paper-level display only work with Phomemo RFID thermal labels; non-RFID labels may not trigger those features.

LCD looks like more of a gimmick than anything else. For christ sakes you can see the label spitting out of the printer. Who cares if the LCD says the label is 80 complete but your lying eyes is saying to your brain it's 75% complete.
I think the % is to show you how much of the label roll is left inside the printer.

Yeah, most people would be better served getting a Brother wireless black and white laser printer. Way more versatile and high yield generic toner can be had for super cheap.
Lol no. I'm literally that guy. I have a brother laser printer and between the stupid expensive toner cartrage and the time to cut the label and then use packing tape to put it on... I've found my $50 chinesium label printer to be an excellent upgrade. I do 5-15 labels daily.

Now I'd really like one like this that held the regular roll inside it like the one here. Dust settles on the labels then makes the labels not perfect in my shop.

Can you please provide details about these free rolls?
You can sign in to your UPS account and order free supplies as long as you do regular shipping purchases. They limit you to 1 roll per style though. 4x6, 4x4. We usually get one of each available. Giant 4x6 has like 3000 labels on it. Most zebra printers have the ability to pass folded labels or a roll. You can put it on label stand (plastic costs few bucks on Amazon or 3D print at home). Thick nice labels

I calculated for three approaches:
  1. Copy paper. 0.025 - 0.05 per label, including the packing tape to cover it.
  2. Self-adhesive label paper. 0.05 per label, generic.
  3. This thing. 0.08 per label, generic.
I ship a lot, only 1 and 3 make sense to me unless 2 has a dedicated printer. Swapping paper and configuring label presets is annoying.
When you ship a lot time is money. We ship over thousand packages a day. Taping makes it inefficient. UPS/fedex pouches could still work with 8x11 pages folded. We get 250 rolls for $2.50 landed (4x6). I have about 18 zebra printers ZD620/621 can print super fast. 2x1, 3x2.... come out super fast. No ink $. I got lots of them used off business owners on facebook marketplace and offer up. Last GX model I paid $20 on facebook and works like a charm with .01 cost for 4x6 labels and occasionally free UPS rolls

I'd buy one of these right now if it were wi-fi. I'm not always in the same room as my packing station, I'd like to have the label waiting for me, and the laser printers aren't great at feeding half-sheet labels. And this when you can get a fricking wi-fi toaster.
https://www.ezeep.com/We have one station connected to bunch of printers. You can print from any other computer in the warehouse or remote while traveling.

Do these only print 4x6 or can you print smaller sizes?

I use a Raspberry Pi Zero to make all my printers wireless. Non-wireless models are cheaper and have fewer points of failure. With CUPS, I share my first-gen Rollo, Brother laser, and Epson color inkjet across all operating systems. Total cost: $15–$20 for a set-and-forget server, or $0 if you already run an always-on Mac or Linux box.

#2 Self-adhesive label paper - If you have a printer with a bypass feeder then you don't need to swap paper. You may need to load it into the bypass feeder for each one though if your bypass feeder can't handle more than one at a time.

This requires Phomemo RFID thermal labels to use the auto-detection feature to recognize label dimensions automatically. Also, real-time paper level display only works with RFID-compatible labels.

You can get TN-760 generic toner on Amazon right now for less than $20 each (right now there's even a 4 pack for $40, but it's limited time). Each of those toner cartridges yields 3000 pages. I've ordered generics plenty and no issues. Just FYI.

If you're doing 15 labels daily, I can see the appeal of a thermal printer though as far as labor time and hassle. I do higher price/lower volume sales, so for me it doesn't make sense.

I tried an aftermarket right when I got the printer.... It would never print good. Right from new I was getting images like it was empty. I just never bought another aftermarket... But man the oem is over $100 now! Luckily I don't have much more printing other than labels.

Free to order online, but I don't know if they provide the thermal labels free. I have only ever ordered the 2 on a sheet for a regular size Laser printer.
