I bought some recently but I don't have a 4k dvd player. Any recommendations on a good one that doesn't break the bank?

Between this, the 3 for $33 deal, and the individual $8.49 titles, my bank account is bleeding dry…. 😅

Burnt by Sony twice. Panasonic and LG have good budget ones.

Nowadays choices are limited.
At this point, that's likely a Sony player.
Drawback, glitch issues are hit n miss & DV is manual on/off.
Panasonic are considered better but cost more especially if you want DV option.

I would look into the Panasonic UB420 or 450 depending on the TV you have. Higher end and OLEDs usually have pretty decent upscaling abilities.

I picked up the 420 used for about $150 and it's been great for my needs. It doesn't support Dolby Vision, but I wasn't too concerned with that since I wanted the better upscaling in exchange since I still buy and own quite a few Blu-Rays. Plus my TV isn't OLED and doesn't upscale much if any.

The 450 supports dolby vision but doesn't have the same chip for HDR optimization or upscaling.

Key Specifications Compared
  • HDR Formats:
    • UB420: Supports HDR10 and HDR10+, but lacks Dolby Vision.
    • UB450: Supports HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision.
  • Video Processing & Upscaling:
    • UB420: Features Panasonic's HCX (Hollywood Cinema Experience) processor and an HDR Optimizer that tone-maps bright highlights for displays or projectors.
    • UB450: Lacks the dedicated HDR Optimizer feature and relies on your TV's built-in dynamic tone mapping.
  • Networking & Connectivity:
    • UB420: Includes built-in Wi-Fi.
    • UB450: Lacks built-in Wi-Fi (relies on a wired Ethernet connection for network features).
  • Audio & Outputs: Both models feature dual HDMI outputs (one for video, one for audio) to prevent compatibility issues with older soundbars or receivers, and both support high-resolution audio formats like FLAC, WAV, ALAC, and DSD.

An Xbox works. The One S can be had for quite cheap and it will play 4K Blu-rays, and if you have any kids they can even play games.

I have a 420 still boxed. I got it for $164 with tax. Now it cost $369 without tax..

Unfortunately, most 4k Bluray players are quite pricey at the moment, so depending on your budget, looking for a used player may be your best bet. I picked up a Sony UBP-X800M2 at a pawnshop for $50. If you want to buy new, I believe the Panasonic DP-UB150/ DP-UB154 is the least expensive option. It does not support Dolby Vision, so if that is a requirement, the Sony UBP-X700/UBP-X700U is the best budget option.

What issues did you have? I have owned a Sony UBP-X1100ES since 2019 and have had pretty much no issues. It froze up once or twice, but a restart fixed it. I also have a UBP-X800M2, which I admittedly hardly use, but I don't think I've run into problems with that either.
