....am I crazy. Or is it cheaper to buy the max pro and max plus extra battery separately (40$ less?)

I only want the maxplus standalone unit. But I also anecdotely feel like this is the normal price?

Hardly. If you knew anything about backup power, you'd know a stupid and cheap gas generator is worthless. In an extended outage you won't have gas and it won't do much for your house anyway. The real way to go is a large power station and a propane generator and/or solar panels to recharge your power station. This is how people who know what they are doing think and prepare.
