The 40 ounce Owala FreeSip is an insulated stainless steel bottle that stands out for its convenient sip lid and strong value at this price. The bottle works even without using the straw, and the cap can be taken apart for a deep clean. It also gets praise for being easy to carry for sports and daily use, with some preferring the updated Sway version for cupholder fit and handle design. Main drawbacks are the bulky, heavy feel when full, the extra cleaning effort around the straw and rubber pieces, and occasional damage or rough condition on arrival.

Common Questions (4)

  • The cap and straw area need regular disassembly, including the rubber pieces, because residue can build up inside the straw mold. The bottle comes apart into three pieces for cleaning, and the cap can be taken apart for a deep clean.

  • The 40-oz size can feel bulky and heavy when full, and some shoppers prefer the 32-oz or 24-oz versions for portability. The 24-oz fits vehicle cupholders well, while the Sway version is preferred for its easier-carry handle and cupholder fit.

  • It uses dual-layer insulation and can keep ice for less time than some competing bottles. Compared with Stanley, one user found the Owala easier to clean and said it kept ice longer than their Stanley Quencher, while others still rate Yeti and Stanley as more durable.

  • Yes. It can be used normally without the straw, and the bottle still works well even if the straw is removed or the straw opening is not used.

good bottle but take apart the rubber pieces and clean inside the straw mold sneaks in there and I clean often
Taking the bottle apart (3 pieces) is a chore no matter what any Owala tatted die hard will tell you. The bottle is also only dual layer insulation and keeps ice less time than competing dual layer insulation bottles. One drop near the top lid and it's now broken and you need to spend $10 (more than half the cost of the bottle) to replace it. Ive tried Owala, the idea, the smaller sipping section can be nice. But cleaning, durability, the actual usefulness of the bottle in terms of keeping cold are all sub par and you can do far better with countless brands out there. This is just the new hype bottle

Feel similar. Had to read this thread to talk me out of a larger size. It's nice but my yetis and Stanleys are in another league for durability.

if you havent tried s'well, their cold retention esp on their standard size is really good, but yes the yetis feel more sturdy but still as susceptible to dings

40oz is too heavy and bucky. 32oz is the sweet spot
That's fine but now worthy of a thumbs down

Great bottle, but the sway version is so much better. It fits in cup holders and the handle is so much easier to carry.

Ordered this from Amazon and received a beat up used bottle with water already in it. Amazon must be losing it.

My Stanley is more work to clean than my Owala. It also keeps ice longer than my Stanley quencher. It's about the model more than the brand I'd argue. I can't comment on durability but we have 3 and they seem fine, my kids have dropped them multiple times.
