M6 probably faster for AI stuff right? Even a m6 / 16gb is probably better for general use. 24gb is no man's land for LLMs, can't run any decent models and don't think the m4 pro chip has the native hardware useful for image / video generation

M5 max with 36gb ram and 512gb at microcenter for 2k seems tempting over this even though more expensive

M6 AI is faster. Single core performance is also faster.

Yeah this model is just kind of DOA imo. At sub 1000 sure but iirc the m6 32gb is about this price and it's gonna be better for what you need it to do

If you have a microcenter they have a screaming deal on the m5 pro model, $500 off for 2000. They also have 200 off the m6 24gb (iirc) which is cheaper than education discount. For basic use this thing is overkill id prob do a Mac mini m6 and 24gb ram, it just gets you breathing room if you do decide you want to mess with ai image gen or stuff later on. It just future proofs a bit, 16gb is tight now a days

Edit this m4 pro model is prob better for gaming than the m6 base if that matters. I'd just look for benchmarks

This is the M6 24 GB price. Well, the M6 24/512 GB is sold out everywhere. I'm holding out till Black Friday.

Why would you buy this and not the M6? Almost the same price

I have a m6 32gb on the way. The jump to m5 pro was too spendy and the m6 performance seems crazy good.

If it matters you can no longer replace the storage module in the new Mac mini's like you could do with the m4

Yea I am fine with 256gb. You just have to push everything off to an external, but for AI once it's loaded into ram it doesn't matter. It's easier to just get a 1tb ssd and run everything off there

This is a meh price for a machine two-generations-ago and lackluster memoconfig. That said, pro processors are better than the base processors of next gen. So this is better than getting a m5 base. Not sure about m6 base.

It's not two generations ago. The only Mac mini's that have came out since Apple silicon are the 2020 version, 2023 version, 2024 version and 2026 version so it's 1 generation not two

When it comes to processors apple has been all over the place. Chips and generations have never been in order since the start of apple silicon. They have skipped chips for some products.

I would recommend the M6 base over this for a first time user with no super heavy need. I have had 4 different generations of Mac mini since 2014... this m6 is a very good choice and save the money for ram or memory upgrade.
