Southwest's 40 percent off base fares looks most useful for travelers who can find one of the reduced seats and want to stretch points or stack with a companion pass window. The sale appears to have been repeated before, and more seats seem to be available this round. Some routes still price the same as before, and several fares are described as no longer competitive versus Delta, United, or American. It is a narrow fare sale that works best when the discount actually applies.

  • The sale window reportedly overlaps with a previously run Companion Pass promotion, which may allow stacking if eligible fares are found.

  • The reduced-rate seats reportedly expanded compared with prior runs of the same promotion.

  • Canceling and rebooking reportedly helped recover 3,500 points on already purchased fares.

  • Some travelers reportedly prefer Southwest's newer boarding procedures.

  • The promotion reportedly appears very limited and may not apply to every fare you search.

  • Southwest reportedly charges much higher cash and point costs than other airlines for similar trips, reducing value.

  • Southwest reportedly becomes noncompetitive on price versus other carriers for certain routes, including a Vegas example.

  • The Houston to Phoenix itinerary reportedly showed no price drop compared with the prior week.

They've had this same sale, with same date range, at least a couple of times in the past couple of months. They are quite limited, unfortunately. It does fall within the same window of the free companion pass promo they had, so if you can stack this sale with that promo, that'd be nice. Just very limited.

Can you help remind me how to stack?

I meant you could potentially stack this 40% sale (if you can find a fare that it applies to) with the previously Companion Pass deal (https://slickdeals.net/f/19838655), which is now expired.

Great deal! Yes it appears to be a repeat of the same sale they have run in the past couple months but they have released more seats at the reduced rates. I recovered 3500 points this afternoon by canceling and rebooking some already purchased fares.
Always book with points!

Man did I love this airline when I was in the Houston area and Houston Hobby airport circa late 90s and 2000s. We no longer live in the area or even a viable SWA destination on the east coat but I still have a crap ton of points. I went to book a trip for my sister through a pretty regular SWA pathway and I literally laughed out loud on the $$$ AND point cost of a flight with them. I booked a ticket with another airline as it just was a joke on price difference not to mention the "upgrades" you had to pay for. RIP Herb Keller as I am sure you are embarrased as to what this airline has become.

Southwest sucks now. I would only fly them if there no other options.

Used to fly them all the time but not now. Cancelled my credit card with them.

I am regularly getting the same rates on Delta as I am getting for SW these days. Why on Earth would I ever fly on Southwest for the same price? The catch was always the cheaper fares. Simple as that. You sacrificed some luxuries, like the entertainment systems, the assigned seats, but you could literally just bring your own device to entertain yourself, or a book, and bags were free. It was common to see $250 tickets on Delta and $79 to $100 on SouthWest... I see ZERO reason to fly SW now personally.

Southwest... it just destroys me... I had to fly 1 way from Columbus to LAX to for work, and work let me choose however I wanted to get back... United 1st Class was only $50 more expensive than the best 1 way option Southwest had.... Hmmm, let me think, Southwest the way it's gone downhill, and I can 'pick a seat' for where ever was available, or 1st Class on United, with a meal, more room and baggage also included... No Brainer. Problem is, this ISN'T the first time, as most flights, for the same price, you're better off flying anyone BUT Southwest anymore.

Same with Delta. The amount of points it takes for a flight now is ridiculous. Flights with points are limited and always require a layover. International flights are cheaper (with points).
