I have an older TS-453be Celeron, is this a lateral move only improved by being newer?

(I'm going from 4x12TB to 4x20TB)

Trying to decide if I should upgrade my QNAP TS-451+ (Intel Celeron J1900 Quad-core up to 2.42GHz). It's been running 9+ years now and supposedly (at least according to both claude and Gemini) the CPU in it is prone to failures.

This one at $500, or wait for the new TS-H465 announced at Computex. There's still no ETA for the new one.

I'm running a 10 year old TS-435 as a plex server and am wondering the same.

Looks like the CPUs benchmark twice as well as the J3455, which is presumably what you have. Obviously if you need more storage and speed, it would not be lateral. Depends on your needs.

You can check the J1900 stepping, they fixed it quietly later. https://community.qnap.com/t/how-...ing-9/6371

I have the 6 bay unit and swapped out my 4 bay 451+ for it. It is definitely much snappier, and there is almost zero audible disk churn, especially when using the qnap menu interface. I don't regret it one bit.

Heh I was in the same boat as you with the 451+. I ended up going for the Terramaster F6-424 (they also have a 4 bay version) with the intel N95. I didn't need use any qnap specific apps and I appreciated the flexible TRAID.

I'm still running the TS-251 that has the bus clock degradation issue. I applied the workaround a few months ago, and I know it will eventually fail.

DAYUM, I snagged one of these babies from Amazon Warehouse for $325 a year ago. It arrived brand new. It's been great!

Thank you, yes I just checked and it's the Intel Celeron Apollo Lake J3455. I upgraded the memory to 16GB and added the QM2-2P-244A Dual M.2 22110/2280 Pcie SSD Expansion Card (PCIe Gen2 X4).

I'm at capacity with my drives and 5 x 20TB sitting unopened since last Black Friday.

Wondering if this makes sense or hold for a 6-Bay

Which 6-Bay did you get?

Are you running a home media server off of it? (Emby, Plex, Jellyfin)?
