The Era 100 SL is a compact Sonos speaker that fits well as a surround or everyday room speaker, with enough output for regular use and no need to jump to Era 300s unless Atmos or a larger setup matters. The sound is described as amazing, and AirPlay or Bluetooth can reduce reliance on the app after setup. The main concern is Sonos software, which is still described as buggy by some and as improved and reliable by others. It is a solid wireless option if the size and app experience suit your setup.

  • The Era 100 SL can deliver a usable experience through AirPlay or Bluetooth after initial setup.

  • The Era 100 SL can pair with an Arc and Sub for surround setups without needing a more expensive Era 300.

  • The Era 100 SL can work reliably for daily streaming across multiple services after earlier software problems were addressed.

  • The Era 100 SL can be used as main and surround speakers with up-firing Atmos drivers instead of installing ceiling speakers.

  • Sonos software updates can be perceived as breaking features while fixing others, creating ongoing streaming friction.

  • The Era 100 SL can be described as buggy or only partially working despite improvements.

  • The Era 100 SL lacks Dolby Atmos support, unlike the Era 300.

  • The Era 100 SL may feel too small for some listening preferences.

You are correct, but you are also living in the past. I would judge a company on what they're currently doing not what they were doing 2 1/2 years ago.
Yup, lets judge a company on what they are currently doing, horrible software. So yes, avoid Sonos.

If you already have an Arc and Sub, go for 300 instead.
This guy drank the kool-aid…

The 100's are more than sufficient with the Arc and Sub. I still use old Play: 1's for my surrounds in 3 of my spare rooms. The 300's would be triple the price overkill.

But if you got the moolah… get the 300's. But I would just use those as a stereo pair and not waste them as surrounds.

To each their own, but as someone who listens to a lot of Atmos, it's night and day difference.
Tried them… hardly noticeable when you got the volume up. So not worth the premium for me. Others may differ.

You want true Atmos? A Soundbar with 300's ain't the answer.

I have an Arc in my loft, one in a spare room, a Playbar in another… all paired with a sub or mini sub with Play:1's as surrounds. The Playbar setup actually sounds the best of the 3. But all 3 sound pretty darn good.

My living room has 7.2.2 system… true Atmos… totally blows the Sonos out of the water. The Sonos still sound awesome and super happy with them… but they don't compare to a full surround system.

I hate Sonos with a passion, the CEO has screwed up the software and every update fixes something and breaks something. Amazing hardware, horrible software. Go with a better quality brand.
BS

Software works fine… if you actually use it. All new Sonos products are Airplay compatible so you never need to ever open up the software after initial setup.

I've made my Gen 1 Play: 5's Airplay capable by adding an Apple AirPort Express Gen 2 via 3.5mm cable.

Using Sonos as a surround system, again, you NEVER have to use the app ever again AFTER initial setup.

All this software bashing bs is all literally bs. You want to use the app? Go ahead, It works fine… but you don't ever need to.

I'm sure it does but I prefer not to clutter my living room with speakers.

YMMV, 100s sounded too small for me.

And is still buggy and half works. Improved is not saying much from the disaster of the major updates they did 2~ years ago.

I use the speakers daily, I cant say the worst money I have ever spent but its near the top. The software barely works, especially with streaming services. The software is cheeks.

Don't use the software then.

You can airplay or Bluetooth to the Sonos and use whatever streaming service you want. Most newer Sonos speakers are airplay and/or Bluetooth capable. There's workarounds for older models.

If it's the worst sounding system you've ever owned, then I agree with you that it's money wasted. But if you like what you hear, you NEVER EVER have to use the software/app ever again AFTER initial setup.

People need to stop whining about the app when you do NOT have to use the app. It's a non issue unless you have older Gen 1 or Sonos 1 app only capable speakers.

Too small? Seriously? How loud or "big" do you need the surround sound to be? Too loud of surrounds is overpowering. There's a reason they're called surrounds and not "mains".

You can get main and surround speakers that have "Atmos" up firing drivers. Which basically what the arc and 300s do. So no need for ceiling speakers.

With your argument, why watch 4k content when you can watch in 1080p because how crisp does the picture has to be?

Get screwed once, shame on you. Get screwed twice, shame on me. Sonos destroyed a $8K system I had with their update.
