I'm looking for my first turntable but specifically with a goal of digitizing some albums that are not released in a digital format. This doesn't appear to have USB or other connectivity for doing that. Is there a way of adding that functionality to something like this?

Good one. Holding out in hopes that the LP70 goes on sale, but thanks for posting this one.

I'm new to this world - is the amp necessary?

Depends on the type of speakers you choose, but I like this setup because you can get good quality speakers and high res streaming.

You need to go up a level, take a look at the AT-LP120XUSB-BK [amazon.com] for $304.20 instead.
