  • Five prominent biophysicists have warned the United States government that sterilization procedures for returning space probes may be inadequate to guarantee uncontaminated re-entry to the atmosphere. Two years later, a probe satellite falls to the earth and lands in a desolate region of northeastern Arizona. Nearby, in the town of Piedmont, bodies lie heaped and flung across the ground, faces locked in frozen surprise. What could cause such shock and fear? The terror has begun, and there is no telling where it will end.

Does anyone know whether the Wildfire Virus from Walking Dead was an intentional reference to Project Wildfire from Andromeda Strain?

Love this book! I read it back in the 90's when I was a teenager and it stuck with me all these years and recommended it to my teenager and he read it and loved it too. Pretty cool for a book written in the 60s

The Audible audiobook is absurdly cheap when purchased with this edition.

Loved this book, movie while visually dated, is great and faithful adaptation. Can't believe didn't realize had a sequel which just finished and I quite enjoyed as well.

which michael crighton books hold up in the face of current tech and life sciences ? basically i want to recommend some of his books (to youngsters) but don't want readers to get wrong or severely outdated information particularly related to life sciences

I'd avoid his climate denialism book State of Fear, and I think it was "Next" that bought in a bit to aggressively to the promises of the human genome project. My recollection was that it got a bit tired as I read through it even 10-15 years ago.

And avoid "Sphere" just on principle.

The original movie is great. The remake is terrible in comparison.

What's wrong with Sphere? I read it when I was a kid and thought it was great. But it's been a while...

The book I couldnt put down as a kid, the movie was awful for no real spectatular reason that I can recall. Not as bad as Congo, I coudlnt believe how into that book I managed to get but the movie seemed parody

"Yes, the name of the "Wildfire" virus in The Walking Dead TV series is an intentional homage to Michael Crichton's sci-fi novel The Andromeda Strain"
