Meross's smart garage opener is a WiFi relay that adds app control, door status, and scheduling to older garage door openers, with strong Home Assistant, Siri, Google, and Apple Watch integration in the right setup. Long-term reliability is a standout, with multiple reports of years of trouble free use and easy installs on older Chamberlain, LiftMaster, and Craftsman units. The main catches are compatibility checks, 2.4 gigahertz WiFi, and extra sensor or adapter steps on some models. Cloud dependence and uneven Apple Home or Google Home behavior also come up, so it works best when the opener and ecosystem match.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes. It can be used over LAN with Home Assistant, supports Siri voice commands on the non-HomeKit version, and the HomeKit version adds Apple Watch and CarPlay controls. Google Home integration works, but it requires a PIN, and upgrading from Google Assistant to Gemini may break voice control.

  • Long-term reliability is repeatedly reported, with examples of 4 to 6 years of trouble-free use and one 5-year install that only needed a sensor fix once. It also supports scheduled close, open-too-long alerts, and multiple phones on one account, which makes it useful for daily automation.

  • It works with many older openers, including 16- to 20-year-old LiftMaster and very old 40-year-old units, as long as the opener responds to shorting the wall-button terminals. The MSG150 is also reported to work with some newer Chamberlain and LiftMaster models, including yellow learn-button units, but Genie support is limited on the MSG150HK version.

  • The opener uses a wired sensor on the door/rail to report open or closed status in the app, and some units can infer position from the travel limits. The newer MSG150 is preferred because it reportedly avoids a separate door-state sensor install, while older setups may need the sensor mounted on the rail and door.

  • It requires 2.4GHz Wi‑Fi, and some setups need the router bands split to configure it reliably. The unit can also interfere with the existing clicker signal if placed poorly, but moving it away from the opener wire or mounting it higher has resolved that issue.

Oh I see that's convenient. No I don't have sensors. Do normal garage doors have open and close sensors?
Okay, so I was slightly wrong about this. It does use the door sensors mounted near your garage door, but that's to tell the app whether there is something blocking the door. It can tell whether the door is actually open or closed because certain units can determine it based on where it is along the travel limits.

Just an FYI. I added this to my 16 year old garage door opener and it worked like a champ. I use my GM EV google voice control to open it while driving. However if you upgrade from Google Assistant to Gemini it won't work anymore.
Thank you for the information. My response was more a snarky criticism on the blind, overreliance on inherently unreliable technologies some people are using to replace their own thinking...

I've had both this and the MyQ, and 2 versions of the MyQ - the bolt on one (e.g. you can install after the fact), and openers with MyQ built in.

MyQ works like a remote in your car would work - so it needs to be paired with your unit just like a new remote would. It uses wifi just to communicate with your account/app.

Meross is different - it works like a button in your garage would - literally just jumps the same contacts that the button does. To know whether the door is open or closed it needs sensors setup on the shuttle of the door actuator and rail.

So, Meross will be much more widely usable (my main complaint with the bolt on MyQ was in pairing it with a Genie opener, since I had upgraded my opener to a belt), but the time I had it, the software wasn't awesome, spelling errors, etc, but it did work and it had more functionality like programming (open/close times etc). MyQ is more polished, but is owned by one of the opener companies so it's very corporatized.

In a newer house I had installed 2 new MyQ-enabled openers a few years ago. These include cameras, which are also in the app. No issues with connectivity - the camera interface is somewhat slow, but I mostly use a separate Ring camera in the garage for monitoring. I have schedules set such that if my kids leave the door open when they leave for school it will close by 745am and it also closes at night.

will this work with android auto? I have a motorcycle with android auto. I would love the capability to just roll up to my garage, push a button on my android auto screen to open the garage.

Yeah, I will add I bought these for my old garage door openers and they are the best addition to my garage door.
Almost 5 Years and running.

Wiring the sensors is stupidly easy. just run it on the same rail as the opener.
The sensor goes on the door, mine was right at the top of the door, so it knows 100% that the door is fully closed.

Features I like most are
1: Timed Close. After a set amount of time that you set 1,2,10 mins it will try to close the door if it is open, based on my sensor position, it will do this even when partially open, fully open or almost closed but not quite. And because it repeats, it eventually closes the door even if I forget or accidentally open it.

2: Notification that Door is open/closed. Every time this thing is too reliable. Notifications on point.

3: Door Open for too long notification: Again, you set the open time and after that it will tell you that the garage door has been open for longer than that. E.g 10mins

4: Open and Close from anywhere in the world. Yep this one is fantastic.

5: Multiple logins on the same account on different phones. You can have both you and your spouse logged into the same account on different phones.

6: The extension from the garage door button trick. When you press the wired garage door opener button, if you hold it down you can increase how long the open time is from there. Useful for many situations I'm working in the garage.

Been using it for nearly 5 years and never failed me. It was an easy install, does everything I expect it to do.

HomeKit variant is $40. Good price. In for 1.
Same here. Of note, the MSG150HK version does NOT support Genie garage door openers

I've had one of the for 4+years for my detached metal garage and it's been flawless. The door is taller than standard so I just had to set the timer to run longer so it could shut all of the way. It's nothing special just a replacement or addition to the normal button you would put on the wall. It should be compatible with everything. It's a wifi relay with a timer.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

Tip for anyone that doesn't feel like running the sensor all the way to the garage door. You can double side tape the wired sensor to the rail close to the opener, and zip tie the magnet to the belt/chain. Picture showing the sensor when garage door's closed. Been flawless since 2022.

MyQ stopped their API to force us to use their ad app that happens to let us operate our garages so I switched to meross (homekit version at the time was only $5 more) and integrated with Home Assistant for automation like Tesla's geofencing auto open and close. I had to get the additional wired button from Meross but it shipped quickly enough that I could relegate that dumbass MyQ app for my family members' garage doors. MyQ is dumb in that if it doesn't close after 2 or 3 times via the app it basically says "you're SOL, physically go there to close and troubleshoot" and that door won't work until then

ratgdo is popular alternative to MyQ's bullshit too
I have the ratgdo and very happy with it but cant offer a comparison seeing as this is the only one I've used which I switched to shortly after MyQ stopped their API.

Not sure if this is available with the Meross, but with the Ratgdo I have a routine set named "Garage Cooling ON" which sets the door to 25% and turns on my fan.

Anyone thinks about installing these on rental or airbnb properties so you can open the garage door if the tenant vacates and doesn't leave you keys/remotes? I was thinking about programming it to my phone's hotspot for WiFi so it isn't depending on the tenant having/providing WiFi. But I wonder if the device will give up looking for the WiFi signal (when you're not there) and goes to sleep until a power cycle to wake it up? Or maybe the WiFi adapter might burnt out while it continuously searches for the programmed WiFi signal.

I have a few of these and they work great with the meross app. The PIN requirement to integrate with Google Home is kinda annoying tho.

I have the multiple door version and largely like it, just it can be hit or miss if they are working in Apple Home. So I just pull up the Meross app.

I have this version, can setup siri voice commands to open or close garage, don't need the Homekit version. Saved me from replacing my opener after the logic board became faulty.

Same. The one installed at my mom's house is at least 6 years old and has never failed. In addition to the list above, I also use the scheduled close feature. There's no reason for her garage to ever be open at night, so I have it scheduled to close at 7p, 8p, and 9p. No matter what time she gets home or takes the trash out or whatever, if she forgets to close the door, it will be closed overnight.
