Will my pre teen son be able to play minecraft java on this and use some of the mods from forge, etc.? His birthday is coming up and with him being young I dont want to spend a ton of money on a PC for this incase he loses interest.

My current i5 desktop is from 2012 and works perfectly fine even with 6 GB RAM.

FWIW, HP Enterprise is completely different from the crap you buy at Best Buy or other consumer level hardware. These are more in line with the enterprise Thinkpads and Dell Pro lines. Personally I prefer Thinkpads (but only the newer ones with CTL in the correct spot), but these Elitebooks are generally very solid and repairable.

These EliteBook G8 models been hoovering around $250-300 for like three years now. Good laptop (typing this on an AMD-based G8 from Microcenter I got 2.5 yrs ago for $299), but I'd think you'd be able to get a newer laptop for the same money nowadays.

Yes, it will work fine for Minecraft. I've played pretty big modpacks on this hardware and it runs pretty well. But honestly if you're going to be pushing the hardware a bit, you can instead get a G9 with i5-1245U/16GB/256GB for like $30 more, or a G10 with even better specs for like $100 more. For it's price though it's fairly solid, and there's a 30 day return option.

I actually like my HP ZBooks and Elitebooks enterprise level laptops. Not a bad price for something casual and for productivity.

16G, Really not bad. If it works. HP elitebooks are notorious for issues. I had 2 refurbished I returned. I wanted it to work so bad.
