This RX 9070 XT Gaming OC is a fast 3x8 pin card, but the main draw is tempered by repeated heat concerns tied to Gigabyte's thermal paste and cooler design. The open box status adds warranty uncertainty, with fine print and receipt details likely deciding whether Gigabyte will cover later artifacting or thermal problems. A quick temp check and FurMark run within the return window can help validate it, and undervolting or power limits may be needed. It looks better suited to buyers comfortable with some risk and possible tinkering.

  • The card can be validated quickly by running Furmark for about 30 minutes to surface thermal or stability issues early.

  • Undervolting and power limits may help manage overheating safety concerns without relying solely on repaste work.

  • The heatsink design may support repasting if thermal paste replacement becomes necessary later.

  • OEM warranty coverage may not apply to an open-box purchase, which can leave repair or replacement costs to be paid later.

  • Bad thermal paste application can cause heat issues, and open-box condition is described as especially iffy.

  • Repasting may not deliver noticeable temperature gains, and it may require buying the same thermal putty used by Gigabyte.

  • The card may fail quickly in some cases, including reports of running super hot and dying after one to two weeks.

Would the return window be enough time to find out? (didn't know that)

Great price but only concern would be whether the OEM warranty would apply to an open box purchase. Bit of a risk that you might have to eat the cost of a repair or new card in year 2 or 3 if you start to get artifacting or thermal issues.

You could check the temps and still return it probably. The issue will be that Gigabyte may not honor the warranty since it's an open box so you may end up with problems a year or so down the line. One option may be to replace the thermal paste yourself, but that has its own risks.

You're not saving very much money to have a card that is very likely to not be covered under warranty. There have been multiple $720-740 9070XT, and while this is a fast 3x8-pin, that's still quite the gamble.

You have 14 days. Plug it in, run Furmark. You'll know within like 30 minutes if it's going to have issues.

You'd probably want to hide the fact that it's open-box. Also, you should video record opening the box (or pick it up locally and check in store) to make sure the "void warranty" sticker is intact.

There is one in good condition near me - worth the gamble? Currently running a 6800 on a 5700X3D with 32GB of DDR4, but would move that down to another system running a 3700X with 16GB of DDR4.

The OEM will go by whatever is printed on the receipt or order confirmation page. Better to read the fine print now before buying, rather than at the time you're trying to file a warranty claim on a $700 item.

I had this version when it first released and it ran super hot and died after a week or 2. I returned. This is junk I promise you.

If these are open box and there's more than one available, it's usually a red flag of defect somewhere. Just stay alert, guys.

If the thermal paste is the problem, could you buy and reapply?

Excluding the fact that it's open boxed during a warranty claim is sketchy and risky on its own. If you don't want to assume the risk, then just don't buy it and hassle yourself down the line.

Theres someone who did a repaste and didn't really get any noticable gains in temps.

Part 1

Part 2

However there is another post on Tom's hardware that does show some minor improvements. I think it is just a poorly designed cooler.

You also need to buy that same thermal putty that gigabyte uses so thats like an extra $10 for a small container.

TLDR make sure you're running an undervolt and maybe even power limits if you're worried about temps on this card or any sort of overheating safety concerns.

I had this specific card I did not experience heat issues but I know they are out there. The heatsink design is excellent so you can always repaste.
