I have some as Home Assistant dashboards in different parts of the house, and use one as a dashboard for sim racing.
Asking them to do much else beyond that though...

The Fire HD 10 is a cheap big screen tablet that works best for reading, Prime Video, YouTube, and other basic dashboard style tasks. Fire Toolbox and sideloading the Google Play Store make it more usable, and it can serve well as a baby monitor or security camera display. The main limits are speed and Amazon bloat, with some setups described as sluggish even after cleanup. The 2021 model is seen as the better jump over 2018, but the Slate Plus version with wireless charging is not included here.
Common Questions (4)
Yes for simple tasks like reading on the big screen, Prime Video, and YouTube. It can also work as a dashboard or monitor display, but it is not a strong choice for heavier multitasking, comics, or 720p video on demanding setups.
Fire Toolbox can remove Amazon bloat and make the tablet more practical for light entertainment and basic apps, and sideloading the Google Play Store opens up more app options. Even then, the tablet is still best suited to simple use rather than replacing a full Android tablet.
It can feel very slow, even after Fire Toolbox, and some users consider it unusable for kids or heavier browsing. For basic media and dashboard use it can still be acceptable, but it is not a good pick if you want a fast primary tablet.
No, the batch discussed does not include the Slate Plus variant. That version is the one with 4GB RAM, wireless charging, and a nicer rubber shell, while the standard 2021 HD 10 has 3GB RAM.

The big things with the Slate variant (Plus version) is that it has 4GB vs 3GB RAM, Wireless Charging, and a nicer rubber shell.
Fire Toolbox and these things become much more useable. Strip out the bloat, get the Google Play Store on it, and still functional enough for light entertainment and the basics.

1) The default launcher and other apps were totally riddled with spyware. The launcher app "Home Pages" was using almost 1GB of data per day even when the tablet was idle; the acceptable amount is 0 bytes. I can't understand what it was even doing. (My specific rate is abnormal but this is a known problem [amazonforum.com])
2) The ability to swap off of these various default apps was removed. In fact, there's a third-party community project "Fire Toolbox" designed to de-crapify these, that can carve some of this BS out from the hardware, but it works best on the default launch OS [majorgeeks.com]. In this case, the Woot refurb had already applied some of the Fire OS patches. These patches do not add any features; the Fire OS was patched specifically to remove sideloading avenues so their spyware doesn't break. Ever wonder why you can get a 25$ tablet? Because you're not the customer, you're the product.
3) Because of all of the spyware, plus the horrendous specs (especially the RAM and processor), these ran like garbage. The thing chugged opening a browser with a single tab. My goals were to be able to read comics or watch 720p video and let me tell you now: Skip kindle fire for this goal.
This is the exact definition of You Don't Pay... With Money. If you value anything other than money, a kindle fire tablet isn't slick at 0$.
But in any case, OOS, Deal Dead. I would have grabbed another just to have laying around.
Also almost all of these are unavailable. Only a handful of the kindles are actually in stock.
If you have a million, then you can buy the latest/greatest.
But if you only have $30, and don't mind using a slow tablet, then it's for you.
Amazon would take them back for trade in for $5. The micro sd cad inside is worth more than $5.
Still, Woot has some other Android tablets once in a while.
They had T-Mobile REVVL TAB 5G with 128GB a few months ago, for about $60 with coupon.
I never heard of REVVL brand. But it is so portable that it becomes my primary tablet while I have Samsung A9, and A11.
