The Fire HD 10 is a cheap big-screen tablet that works best for reading, streaming, and simple dashboard or monitor duties. It can handle Prime Video, YouTube, baby monitor feeds, Home Assistant dashboards, and light note taking, especially after Fire Toolbox and the Play Store are installed. The 2021 model is seen as the better jump over 2018, but the Slate Plus version with wireless charging and 4GB RAM is not included here. Performance can still be slow and limited for heavier use, so it fits basic tasks more than a full tablet replacement.

Common Questions (3)

  • It works well for basic tasks like reading, Prime Video, YouTube, Home Assistant dashboards, baby monitor or security camera viewing, and simple sim-racing dashboards. It is not a good choice for heavier use, note-taking as a notebook replacement, or demanding apps because performance can be slow even after Fire Toolbox.

  • Yes. Removing Amazon bloat with Fire Toolbox and sideloading Google Play can make the tablet more practical for light entertainment and basic apps. The 2021 Slate/Plus variant is especially useful because it has 4GB RAM, wireless charging, and a nicer shell, but that model is not included in this batch.

  • The 2021 model is described as the bigger upgrade jump compared with 2018, while the 2021-to-2024 change is incremental. For Kindle Paperwhite specifically, 2021 adds warm light and a slightly bigger screen, while 2024 adds warm light but also loses normal hard-drive recognition over USB, which makes file-copy backups harder.

Dang, was hoping that the "Slate" variant would be tucked in there somewhere for the Fire HD 10 2021 tablets. Scored one of those last year for $25, totally worth it.

The big things with the Slate variant (Plus version) is that it has 4GB vs 3GB RAM, Wireless Charging, and a nicer rubber shell.

Fire Toolbox and these things become much more useable. Strip out the bloat, get the Google Play Store on it, and still functional enough for light entertainment and the basics.

Whoever is designing the icons for the devices seriously deserve a raise. It's so pleasing to look at. Androids and Apples are so 'cold' in comparison.

5 year old Android tablet? Hard pass, even at $26 you'll die holding it waiting for it to do anything.

I bought a fire HD 10 tablet from woot in 2022 and it was totally unusable.

1) The default launcher and other apps were totally riddled with spyware. The launcher app "Home Pages" was using almost 1GB of data per day even when the tablet was idle; the acceptable amount is 0 bytes. I can't understand what it was even doing. (My specific rate is abnormal but this is a known problem [amazonforum.com])

2) The ability to swap off of these various default apps was removed. In fact, there's a third-party community project "Fire Toolbox" designed to de-crapify these, that can carve some of this BS out from the hardware, but it works best on the default launch OS [majorgeeks.com]. In this case, the Woot refurb had already applied some of the Fire OS patches. These patches do not add any features; the Fire OS was patched specifically to remove sideloading avenues so their spyware doesn't break. Ever wonder why you can get a 25$ tablet? Because you're not the customer, you're the product.

3) Because of all of the spyware, plus the horrendous specs (especially the RAM and processor), these ran like garbage. The thing chugged opening a browser with a single tab. My goals were to be able to read comics or watch 720p video and let me tell you now: Skip kindle fire for this goal.

This is the exact definition of You Don't Pay... With Money. If you value anything other than money, a kindle fire tablet isn't slick at 0$.

It's good for the price if you just want to do simple things like watch your Prime videos or YouTube or whatever. I have the previous 2019 model and I still use it in 2026. I have the Google app store sideloaded as well, which opens the door for a lot of other apps.

But in any case, OOS, Deal Dead. I would have grabbed another just to have laying around.

Does scratch and dent include possible scratches on the screen? My 2018 paperwhite is starting to feel pretty slow so I'd be open to upgrading to the 2021 or 2024. Is the 2024 a massive leap over the 2021 and worth the extra $35? I mainly want usbc and the warm light which they both have.

Also almost all of these are unavailable. Only a handful of the kindles are actually in stock.
I have two 32gb 2021 Paperwhite's from Woot (both bought at different sales) and they looked brand new when they arrived. I got the 32gb to not have the ads (and figured that people who bought the more expensive ones would take better care). Not a scratch on either and a great deal at $55 or less.

That's depends on your wallet.
If you have a million, then you can buy the latest/greatest.
But if you only have $30, and don't mind using a slow tablet, then it's for you. Big Grin

slow AF, even with Fire Toolbox it's still junk. My kids won't even use it. Still have two I can't get rid of. Can't pay me to own one of these.

I would skip Fire HD tablet. I started buying them from Best Buy since 2017. They are slow.
Amazon would take them back for trade in for $5. The micro sd cad inside is worth more than $5.
Still, Woot has some other Android tablets once in a while.

They had T-Mobile REVVL TAB 5G with 128GB a few months ago, for about $60 with coupon.
I never heard of REVVL brand. But it is so portable that it becomes my primary tablet while I have Samsung A9, and A11.

I use these as a baby monitor and security camera monitor. They've been great. You do need to install play store though.

In that case I'll buy them for $5 each of you
