After running Fire Toolbox on it to neuter the Amazon crap, they're good for basic stuff.

I have some as Home Assistant dashboards in different parts of the house, and use one as a dashboard for sim racing.

Asking them to do much else beyond that though...

The Fire HD 10 is a cheap big screen tablet that works best for reading, Prime Video, YouTube, and other basic dashboard style tasks. Fire Toolbox and sideloading the Google Play Store make it more usable, and it can serve well as a baby monitor or security camera display. The main limits are speed and Amazon bloat, with some setups described as sluggish even after cleanup. The 2021 model is seen as the better jump over 2018, but the Slate Plus version with wireless charging is not included here.

  • The Fire HD 10 can work well for basic dashboard and sim racing uses after removing Amazon bloat with Fire Toolbox.

    NowIHaveAnAccount

  • The Slate/Plus Fire HD 10 2021 variant adds wireless charging and extra RAM, which can make Fire Toolbox and Google Play more usable.

    Zexmaix

  • The Fire HD 10 can serve as a baby monitor or security camera monitor once the Play Store is installed.

    mgl888

  • The Fire HD 10 is useful for reading on a larger screen, functioning like a Kindle experience on a bigger display.

    jchu108

  • The Fire HD 10 can feel very slow even after running Fire Toolbox, making it unusable for some purposes.

    slickd888

  • A Fire HD 10 refurb experience can include heavy spyware-like behavior and reduced ability to disable default apps, leading to poor performance.

    bekeleven

  • The Slate/Plus Fire HD 10 2021 model with wireless charging is not included in this batch, limiting access to the most desirable 2021 variant.

    avalon

  • The Fire HD 10 may require sideloading the Google Play Store to unlock broader app options for everyday tasks.

Anyone have any experience using the Scribe? I actually just want it to read, I'm used to reading on an 11" screen and need a replacement. Curious about anyone's pro/cons.

Does scratch and dent include possible scratches on the screen? My 2018 paperwhite is starting to feel pretty slow so I'd be open to upgrading to the 2021 or 2024. Is the 2024 a massive leap over the 2021 and worth the extra $35? I mainly want usbc and the warm light which they both have.

Also almost all of these are unavailable. Only a handful of the kindles are actually in stock.

Funny I was running comparisons through AI yesterday. It said largest leap was 2018 to 2021 and the 2021 to 2024 was an incremental upgrade so I bought 2021.

I have a few 2018, 2021 and one 2024 Kindle Paperwhite. I can tell you the differences.

2018: No warm light.
2021: With warm light, slightly bigger screen.

2024: With warm light. When you connect it to a computer, the device is not read by computer as a hard drive. It is the big different with previous Kindle paperwhite. You cannot backup the device like copying from a a hard drive.

Not all the refurbished kindle were $20. Basic kindle with no backlight is cheaper. Kindle Paperwhite is more expensive. I paid $70 on a 2018 version of Kindle paperwhite a few years ago.

It is good if you are going to use it for reading on the big screen. It works basically like kindle on a bigger screen. If you are going to use it for writing, it depends on how you want to use it. I think it will be great for taking some notes on top of the pages such as textbook. But it has limited ability if you are going to mainly use it for not taking and replace a notebook.
Overall not bad for this price.

Hell I have been using a 2019 version of the Fire 10. This is a no-brainer at $29.
