Bought one last week with 1tb of storage. Brand new refurbished laptop. 16gb of ram is fine but windows and chrome eat it up quickly and you can notice it lagging with too many things running in the back ground.

I would reinstall windows with the iot ltsc version to remove any bloat. Even on 32+ gb systems but especially lower this helps a ton

These modern Acer systems are great at running linux, which is what I use on my 100 series swift go. Everything works out of the box with no issues. None of the bloat or tracking of Windows either.

How is the battery life with linux? And which distro?

Battery life with linux is comparable to windows when running. One caveat is that as far as I know linux doesn't support "hybrid sleep" where it will hibernate after a short time in standby, so the battery will drain continuously by 5-8% per hour even with the lid closed.

Distribution is fedora atomic. For something more user friendly (codecs built in etc) I recommend either Bazzite (gaming focused but it's easy to turn off steam and the like) or ultramarine linux.

The only wrinkle I've had is that you can't set the battery charge limit to 80% to preserve health in linux. However, it persists across reboots, so I reboot into a tiny Windows partition I have for other reasons anyway, set it, then reboot back into Linux. I leave it at 80% always so this hasn't been a problem for me.

You 100% can do hybrid sleep on Linux. It's just you need a swap file big enough to hold all your ram, and most distros don't choose to do that by default.
