The Fosi Audio DAP Neo is a small dedicated music player built for distraction free listening, with tactile buttons, wired audio, and a pocketable form that fits work, yard work, travel, or leaving the phone behind. It also avoids phone battery drain and the hassle of loading large music libraries onto an iPhone, while the CS43198 DAC is noted as supporting Apple Lossless and M4A playback. The main catch is that storage is microSD based with no built in memory, and the bundled card may be less appealing than using your own larger trusted card. Bluetooth is also limited to the lowest codec, so it makes the most sense for wired listening and simple offline use.

  • Commuters who want distraction-free listening, because it plays music without calls or notifications draining a phone battery.

  • People who keep a large offline library on microSD, because swapping cards and loading files through Explorer is straightforward.

  • Travelers on long flights who want a pocket music player, because it handles a big FLAC library without tying up a phone.

  • Parents sending kids out with music, because a pocket-sized player is easier to carry than an iPad and less risky to hand over.

  • People who need a simple out-of-box library, because storage depends on a separate card and the included card may be low-end.

  • Buyers who want built-in storage, because the player runs entirely from a microSD card.

  • Listeners who expect Bluetooth-first convenience, because it uses the lowest Bluetooth codec instead of higher-quality LDAC.

And ripping music, collecting album art, pirating, etc. is not too much work?

In 2026 there is simply no advantage to a DAP with the state of music streaming today

it's only going to get better as data becomes cheaper

if I pay for 10K songs, ($1 each) that's like 100 years of streaming
Ripping, collecting album art, etc., isn't an issue for those of us who did our collections years ago and have it all sitting on a desktop/laptop already.

I have that too. You don't want new music?

I think there's a very real nostalgia factor for things like this that is missed when you go all in on the "just use your phone" argument. Also, for people looking to break the subscription cycle. Maybe you want to go back to directly supporting musicians you care enough about to actually shell out the 10bucks and buy their album rather than stream it. If you stop paying your monthly sub, you won't have any of that music anymore.
Streaming directly supports musicians. More than buying an album does. Buying an album is a one time fixed cost.

If you stream your favorite artist using a premium subscription they are paid directly out of your subscription cost, not ad revenue.

This is also true with youtube premium. Rather than paying your favorite artist pennies from a free account, you are paying them dollars.

Apple music + Apple TV is only $5.99 a month or whatever and it's really easy to sign up for a student account

Serious answer: I've already answered that question.
Why not? As stated before use your phone kills your battery life not just faster but permanently the less time you have to use your phone the longer the life of your battery will last on your phone. I am talking about charging cycles second having a dedicated music player is nice you can leave it in your car gym bag etc. there are a bunch of reasons 2. But we can ponder about justification y or y not but I rather you all enjoy the music the way you want 2. I have a bunch of subs and could do with one less. I honestly use Amazon music and carry 2 phones like I'm hustling dope because my phones battery life sucks despite having a power bank. Yet my phone still dies on me, so yes can see the appeal.

The comments in this thread promoting this product instead of using a phone seem to really be reaching. I can't speak for iOS because I haven't used it in a few years, but I use Android to listen to flacs all day and none of these supposed issues they mention have ever come up. If you want a dedicated player, get it, these look neat, but let's not pretend like modern phones aren't perfectly good for this use case. That's just crazy.

How has no one mentinoned the difference in DACs between a phone and DAP? DAPs are made for music, phones are not.

It's a bit silly to make the modern iPod, but run it with the Lowest possible bluetooth codec. This + LDAC bluetooth streaming would've been an instant buy for me as I could stop connecting a dongle to my phone. Maybe the "pro version" soon

Not one person has said a phone is unsuitable. Someone asked why someone might prefer one of these and some of us obliged with some reasons.

By all means everyone should use what works best for them and their circumstances.

If anyone is interested in jumping on this, spend the extra 40 bucks for four times the storage.

I know. We've got our phones that can do all this. Why do we want a dedicated player?

One reason people go for devices like this one is for the experience of listening to music with no interruptions or distractions. No phone calls, no notifications, just a little break away from the world to enjoy some of your favorite tunes.

Another reason is battery anxiety. It's a real thing from some people. The ability to listen to music without worrying about running your phone battery down can bring peace of mind and absence of worry.

The third reason isn't really a factor at this price point, but higher end digital audio players have much better quality DACs and other components than are found in phones and the listening experience can be much better with the right source material.

Fosi is a respected Chinese audio brand and isn't fly by night. You could do a lot worse than this one if you're looking for something inexpensive.
Fourth reason - you have kids that want to listen to different music or not at a time you can have it on, even if everyone does agree. We found a device like this that had a locked down version of Android, but had Apple Music and Pandora pre installed. They have worked fine for us. Our kids have iPads, but a pocket-friendly device is much easier than trying to take an iPad every where. Plus I'd rather they take a $60ish device into the backyard to listen to music than an iPad.

Tempted. I have a couple SanDisk Sansa players that are serving me well, but I'm worried about their age. I also have an iPod Nano, but the battery only lasts an hour or so. It is so nice to have an old school media player with buttons that I can press by feel. There are times I'm doing yard work or going near the water, and I don't want my flagship phone with me. Bluetooth is getting better, but it will never be as good as wired in regards to latency and quality.

I bought a nice DAP about a month ago, filled it with some legendary FLAC jams, paired it with some vintage looking aux headphones - and girls are mirin me like crazy. Just saying skipping tracks on my phone always made me look like a drug dealer or solar panel salesman.

Sorry, but must disagree with your very first point.

It appears that the music storage for this DAP is purely micro SD based and I believe that it's safe to assume that the micro SD cards provided will be the cheapest that Fosi Audio can source.

I'd recommend buying the less expensive model and taking the extra $34 to another retailer and buying an even larger (128GB or 256GB) micro SD card of a trusted brand. Looks like a 128GB micro SD card can be purchased for around $25. Please, note the documented 256GB limit (grumble).

Oh, good catch! I thought it was internal storage. If it's completely micro SD based then I have to retract my point and agree with your assessment. Those no-name Chinesium micro SD cards are just too risky to take a chance on.
