The Fosi Audio DAP Neo is a compact dedicated music player aimed at distraction free listening, with buttons, wired audio, and microSD based storage for offline music. It fits use cases like work, workouts, yard work, plane rides, and keeping a separate player in a car or gym bag, while also avoiding phone battery drain and notification interruptions. The comments also note support for M4A and Apple Lossless through the CS43198 DAC. The main cautions are that storage is card based rather than built in, the bundled card may be low end, Bluetooth uses a basic codec, and early firmware bugs are still a concern.

  • Commuters who want distraction-free music, because a dedicated player avoids calls, notifications, and phone battery drain.

  • People who keep a separate music library on microSD, because the card can be swapped and reloaded without filling phone storage.

  • Travelers taking long flights, because a pocket player can hold a large offline library without tying up a phone.

  • Gym and outdoor workout listeners, because a smaller player is easier to carry and less worrying around sweat, rain, and bumps.

  • Buyers expecting built-in storage, because the player runs from a microSD card and has no internal memory.

  • Listeners who want Bluetooth-first convenience, because the built-in Bluetooth is limited to the lowest codec and lacks higher-quality options like LDAC.

  • People who want a polished first-release device, because early firmware can still have bugs and missing features.

  • Shoppers who only need battery backup, because a power bank is cheaper and more useful day to day.

If anyone is interested in jumping on this, spend the extra 40 bucks for four times the storage.

I know. We've got our phones that can do all this. Why do we want a dedicated player?

One reason people go for devices like this one is for the experience of listening to music with no interruptions or distractions. No phone calls, no notifications, just a little break away from the world to enjoy some of your favorite tunes.

Another reason is battery anxiety. It's a real thing from some people. The ability to listen to music without worrying about running your phone battery down can bring peace of mind and absence of worry.

The third reason isn't really a factor at this price point, but higher end digital audio players have much better quality DACs and other components than are found in phones and the listening experience can be much better with the right source material.

Fosi is a respected Chinese audio brand and isn't fly by night. You could do a lot worse than this one if you're looking for something inexpensive.
Don't forget the smaller form factor.

Ever since the ipod touch days I always noted how dedicated music players was a lot thinner and not as bulky as actual phones. Back then I also had a cheapie android phone that I used kind of like a dedicated mini tablet/video/mp3 player purpose. And it just wasn't as inefficient in doing what I wanted because it's memory was tied up to other things.

Plus I don't take my phone to the gym or when I workout outside. Too bulky, don't want it getting drenched in sweat, wet from the rain or banged around, and I won't care as much if it ends up missing.

That's where these type of devices are of value for me and why I picked up some cheaper ones a couple of years ago. Wanted something like the Sansa Clip. The FM radio is loud, even on the lowest settings. But other than that, suits my purposes fine.

This one posted is a bit more expensive than what I got but I assume better quality too.

Oh, this is so right. Size can play a huge part in it. A person cannot realistically say that a phone can be used as effectively in every situation as, say... an iPod Shuffle could, for example.

Does anyone know if you can use spotify or amazon music on it? I want a music device my son (12 yr old) can use while running cross country, but we don't want him having a phone for at least a few more years. I'd rather be able to download from a streaming service than have to burn MP3s again (did that decades ago)

According to Google AI:
Quote :
The Fosi Audio DAP Neo Modern Classic MP3 Player is not a streaming device. Instead of online streaming apps like Spotify or Apple Music, the DAP Neo is a dedicated offline digital audio player designed for local music collections.
See Ecoustic's article [ecoustics.com] for other options.

As far as downloading music from Spotify or Amazon Music for use in the Neo, Google AI says this:
Quote :
You can download music from Spotify for offline listening within the official app, but you cannot save the files as standalone MP3s. The downloaded files are encrypted and only play inside the Spotify app. You cannot transfer them to a USB drive or play them in a different media player.

Amazon Music subscription downloads are encrypted, locked inside the Amazon Music app, and cannot be exported, transferred to external storage (like an SD card or USB drive), or burned to CDs.

Offline only. If you purchase digital albums from Amazon, the files are DRM-free.

You can buy individual tracks and albums from Qobuz or Amazon, maybe others. There are projects on github to download music from the various streaming providers, but it is legally questionable. I use a Windows app called Streamwriter to automatically record my favorite Internet radio stations and listen to them later. For an iHeart station, search the web page source code for the Shoutcast link and paste it into Streamwriter.

A typical artist earns about a 1/3 of a cent on a stream (of the entire song). A typical new artist makes about $1.25 per cd sold. So you'd have to stream the song fully 450 times before the artist makes more from streaming than a cd sale. Well established / high selling artists may have different calculations, but they make more from concerts, merchandise, etc.
Tidal is the only music streamer paying more than a penny per stream. The rest pay far less https://virpp.com/hello/music-str...musicians/

This is not correct. They only make 1/3 of a cent (I think it's less than that) if you stream it for free. If you use a premium account (spotify, apple music, whatever) that is ad-free, they are paid out of your subscription costThey take your monthly subscription cost, divide it by who you watch/listen to and directly divide the money based on the percentage you watch/listen to each creator/artist.If you only listen to one artist for one month, they will give 100% of your allocated money to said artist.
Only Tidal follows that model AFAIK
