I pull trim from time to time, and a wide nail puller seems to work fine.
I see this about twice as wide. Is there some magic in this that makes it worth buying as a single-purpose tool?

It's a dual purpose tool, trim and tiles . But seriously if its wideness or lever action prevents you from putting one accidental hole into your drywall while pulling trim it probably pays for itself in saved time.
I just use a 6" putty knife and a 4 inch putty knife, Wedge the crow bar inbetween, slowly pry untell the 4" putty isn't needed.
No need for extra tools unless you are trying also day.
