Unfortunately a huge negative is this has no HDMI ARC pass thru. This means you can't use the TV or a Roku remote to control the volume of the soundbar.

You should be able to use digital optical. That's my current setup on a TV.

Many (most?) TVs will not support "soft volume control" as you describe when using optical (TOSLINK) because optical audio is designed for fixed-level output. Scaling the volume on an optical signal means compromising on the audio resolution.

For most people, a more viable workaround is to pick up an "ARC audio extractor" box which supports CEC. This will connect to the TV over HDMI and turn the audio-out from the TV into an analog audio signal that can be fed into the soundbar's AUX input. The CEC support means the audio level will adjust when you use the TV's remote control.

This can be worked around but requires an extra $20 box—see my comment above.

Maybe I'm oversimplifying, but typically on all my TVs, I use the digital optical cable and just use the TV remote or a Fire stick remote to control both (TV and Soundbars). I've not needed to purchase additional equipment, like the HDMI Arc passthrough.
