This 39 piece Duralast metric impact socket set stands out as a low priced way to get a full 1 half inch drive kit with a lifetime warranty. The Cr Mo construction is framed as stronger than Cr V, and the deep sockets are expected to hold up well on larger fasteners. The set does not include every size, with 25 mm, 28 mm, and 29 mm missing, and the smaller sockets can be harder to fit into tight spaces because they are not fully tapered. Case damage on pickup is also a recurring hassle, so it is a practical value play if the included sizes match the job.

  • The 1/2-inch 39-piece set can be picked up for $45, making it a strong option for occasional use.

  • The set includes a lifetime warranty that can reduce the risk of having to buy another socket set if a socket breaks.

  • The Cr-Mo construction can offer stronger performance than Cr-V sockets for impact work.

  • The set can be useful for larger fasteners because deep sockets are preferred for those jobs.

  • The 39-piece metric coverage skips key sizes, including 25mm, 28mm, and 29mm.

  • In-store pickup can arrive with a smashed blow-molded case, including a ripped latch that affects how securely it closes.

  • The set may not cover a complete 9mm-to-30mm run in both standard and deep lengths, which can matter if a specific size like 25mm is needed.

  • The smaller sockets may be harder to fit into tight areas because they are not fully tapered.

Decent deal for an almost complete metric set. I never needed sae sockets ever. Get an additional 10% off in-store if you're military or a veteran.

The count doesn't work for a full 9 to 30 run. That's 22 sizes, times two lengths is 44, and the set is 39 with the u-joint in there. So a few sizes get skipped on each side. Anyone with the case open, which ones are missing? Matters more than the Cr-Mo talk if the one you need is a 25.
Is that a deal breaker?

I listed all the sizes in my original post. SD staff edited them out. smh.

From 9mm through 30mm...NO 25mm, 28mm, and, 29mm.

I have rarely ever seen this many sizes in a set at this price point. If you do need any of the 25, 28, or 29. Get the singles to go with it.

I wish they were full tapered like some are. For the smaller sizes it's sometimes harder to get the sockets into tight areas.

Damn, since I did in store pickup (and it was the last one) the unit I got has a smashed blow molded case, with one of the two plastic latches ripped off, so only one latch holds it together. AZ didn't want to help me, I went to a 2nd AZ which had one in stock (but was stolen so wrong stock info). Is it worth driving an hour r/t to swap this broken case for a good one? OR, has anyone heard of contacting AZ corp OR duralast and getting a replacement top lid? The clamshell is two pieces so if I could find a good "top" which has the latches on it, I'd be happy, but getting damaged cases is annoying AF. The sockets don't look used, but someone DEFINATELY threw that case around the truck HARD.
What do you guys think, worth the hassle to get a properly locking case?

That sucks. It's definitely annoying. Whether it's worth the drive, it's really up to you. I would recommend you call the store and tell them what's going on BEFORE you hop into your car. You may find out more information at that point whether you should even go there to begin with.

A couple of other things to consider...
  1. Shoot an email to AZ corporate and see what they would do. Get that out of the way. It costs you a few minutes.
  2. In the meantime, find some heavy-duty bungy cord, rubberband, or velcro. That'll be your short-term solution.
  3. Look up those 3D printing websites if you get lucky and find a template for for the latch.

Doesnt hurt to do a online chat with them...who knows...maybe the case is covered under the warranty?

I fired off a website contact us message and included the picture. We'll see. I'd accept a new clamshell top from the manufacturer, or a partial refund since this is NOT considered new stock, but damaged new stock which IMO should have had a discount since its literally half about to spew heavy sockets everywhere. If it was just the scratches and case having cuts and tears as if someone hulk-threw it across the room, but the latch is one problem too many, and affects it working.

Will do. No word from corp. Im thinking about just driving 20 mins each way to a place with 2 in stock, buying one, and returning the orig back to the store. Let them sell it on extra discount because its busted up. But Ill update if I hear anything back. If these were going into a big metal toolbox I wouldn't care, but I haven't jumped up to "need to hire a tow truck to move my tools" level yet... But thanks to SD, I'm getting closer.
EDIT: just got an email from corp:

"Thank you for taking the time to contact AutoZone. We appreciate you bringing this matter to our attention. Yes, we can help you file this complaint. To address this situation and provide you with a satisfactory response, we have forwarded your comments to the management team in your area for review. There was a store 20 minutes (each way) that had a couple in stock. I simply went there and explained my situation to the manager, and she was nice enough to simply swap them out, and gave me a properly new and functional set. No clue what corp will follow up and do, (Ill tell them never mind Im cool), but I gave that diff autozone the shipping-broken set and will let them trash it out or what4ever they do with defective products. Im whole now Smilie
