The JBL 308P MkII is a powered near field studio monitor that stands out for neutral, fatigue free sound and strong value at this price. It can fill a fairly large room, works well for mixing, desktop audio, and even home theater with the right setup, and the low end reaches deeper than the smaller 305P. The main tradeoffs are practical ones, since each speaker needs power, there is no HDMI or digital input, and the back panel volume control can be awkward with a TV. The cabinets also have no grills, so the tweeters and woofers need a little care.

Common Questions (5)

  • They can work with a TV, but they are not soundbar substitutes and they have no HDMI inputs. You'll need extra connection gear and, for easy volume control, a preamp or other volume-control device; a receiver with full pre-outs can also work.

  • They can play full enough for many rooms on their own, with a measured low end around 43 Hz. A sub is still helpful for deeper bass and higher movie output, and the 308s are more satisfying without a sub than the smaller 305/306 models.

  • They are powered monitors, so each speaker needs its own power cable and they are not meant to connect straight to a cheap AVR. For desktop use they work well, but the setup is less convenient than passive speakers because you also need to manage the stereo input and volume control.

  • The 308P MkII reaches deeper bass and is more satisfying without a sub than the 305/306 models, with the 308s dropping off around 45 Hz versus about 60 Hz for the 305s. If you want the larger cabinet and fuller low end, the 308s are the better pick; the 306Ps are the cheaper alternative.

  • They sound excellent, but they have no grills and the dome tweeters and woofers can be damaged more easily than on speakers with heavy-duty protection. They are best suited to studio or careful hi-fi use rather than rough handling.

Would this be appropriate for use as a stage monitor?

This is an outstanding deal! Destroys any soundbar/pseudo-sub combo without breaking a sweat.

Dang, this is what I paid for the 305s way back when.

I would love to justify getting these, especially for this price.

These aren't meant to be soundbar substitutes. These are near field monitors for audio mixing.

Yes, that was their original design goal. Nonetheless, they can be used for HT whether in 2.0 or as part of a surround setup (though this is more troublesome with all the individual power cords needed as well as a receiver with full pre-outs). JBL does make their own soundbar/pseudo-sub combos, lol.

It would be damn near impossible to find large passive bookshelves with anything approaching these JBLs' sound quality for $150 a pop.

These are large and beefy. They are intended for a Sound Bench?

No you typically need much more SPL capability and overall durability.
These also have no grills so the woofers and very delicate dome tweeters can easily be damaged.

Get something with heavy duty grills and more maximum output capability.

For studio use and hifi use these are great, performing well above entry level.
These are actually quite excellent and have been Klippel NFS tested via ASR.

These definitely can be used with your large TV but they do not have HDMI inputs and in general connecting them the way you want will take some little extra efforts.
It will be worth it.
These can fill a fairly large space with very good sound. No sound bar for anywhere near $300 can come close unless you get a very slick deal on a high end sound bar.

Many user won't even require a sub though like just about any set-up movies in particular almost always benefit from a beefy sub for really deep bass and higher output.

These are excellent speakers, end stop. Of course you can spend more and get better, but dollar for dollar, I don't think anything comes close. The only downside is that, being powered, they're not designed to work straight from your cheap AVR.

I have an earlier model of these., as well as the substantially smaller 305s. The -3dB point on these is 43 Hz. The weird thing is the -3dB point on of the 305Ps is 45 Hz, not much different despite the much smaller woofer size.
