The JBL 308P MkII is a powered near field studio monitor that stands out for neutral, fatigue free sound and strong value at this price. It can fill a fairly large room, works well for mixing, desktop audio, and even home theater with the right setup, and the low end reaches deeper than the smaller 305P. The main tradeoffs are practical ones, since each speaker needs power, there is no HDMI or digital input, and the back panel volume control can be awkward with a TV. The cabinets also have no grills, so the tweeters and woofers need a little care.

  • The 308P MkII can deliver strong room-filling sound and can work well as desktop speakers.

  • The sound signature is described as flat and accurate, with low fatigue for longer listening sessions.

  • These monitors are designed for near-field audio mixing rather than soundbar-style TV listening.

  • Long-term ownership reports indicate the speakers can remain in excellent condition after years of use.

  • Using them with a TV can require extra connection effort because they do not include HDMI inputs.

  • Powered-monitor setup can be less straightforward with some AVRs because they are not designed to work directly from a cheap AVR.

  • The speakers lack grills, and the dome tweeters and woofers can be damaged more easily.

  • TV volume control can be inconvenient because the TV output is fixed volume and the back-panel knob is hard to adjust.

I have the Mk1, which have been great. These are not small. They take up quite a bit of real estate on my desk. I do audio recording and use them for mixing, but I also use them for all sound through my PC. I have a set of the 305 model at my office. Excelent value.

These are powered monitors (they each need a standard power cable and half of the stereoy input). The Mk1 version gets plenty loud to fill a room.

Monitors are meant to be EQd pretty flat so that they can let hear what is there vs some speakers that are tuned to sound pleasant.

should i get these, or the klipsch 600m ii that occasionally pops up on slickdeals? I know these JBL's are already powered, but in terms of just upgrading my Dayton Audio b652 which is better? Thanks in advance!

If only they have digital inputs so i can connect my TV directly without another piece of equipment in between.

I'd take these over the Klipsch --- the JBL will be more neutral and less likely to cause ear fatigue.

Sure, if you want to pay $360 for ONE Adam equivalent, just to get that 10% improvement. https://a.co/d/0eZ4FCZS

How loud are these? My use case is in my 4,000sqft work shop for loud tunes via Bluetooth adapter . Currently using a 20 year old onkyo 2.1 home theater setup
I'm never sure how to judge stereo systems.

Flat is pleasant.

The klipsch 600m measure poorly. Not sure if anybody's measured the mkii, but not reason to think they'll be better.

Klipsch makes some (not all) excellent value subs and a rare good speaker, but mainly they chase cheapness and image over quality sound. Hey, it makes them successful.

I have an earlier model of these., as well as the substantially smaller 305s. The -3dB point on these is 43 Hz. The weird thing is the -3dB point on of the 305Ps is 45 Hz, not much different despite the much smaller woofer size.
This is a situation where specs don't show the reality. 305s start dropping off around 60hz. 308s start dropping off around 45. I think that you can get away without a sub either way if you really don't care, but the 308s will be much more satisfying without a sub than the 305s or 306s. Even my 708s do way better with a sub, though.

These are large and beefy. They are intended for a Sound Bench?

8" JBL Professional 308P MkII 2-Way Powered Studio Monitor

16.5" High x 10" Wide x 12.1" Deep
419mm High x 254mm Wide x 308mm Deep
Weight: 17.87 lbs (8.1 kg)
That's pretty lightweight though - I'm surprised how light these would be for the size. They must be some thin plastic. Less an issue with the limited low end extension. My 20 year old 8-inch active monitors and other 20 year old 8-inch standard passive bookshelf speakers are both over 30lb per, for comparison. As a disclaimer though, there may be magnetic shielding involved with possibly both of them, from that era, adding to those weight figures!

I haven't heard these, but they always look like they'd be a great value option when they hit sale prices. Used prices aren't much lower. Likely a much better option for many people compared to the Klipsch non-monitor powered speakers that always show up on here for a much higher price, and have amps that fail within a handful of years...

In a garage stereo environment, would you get a fosi preamp for this? Or is there something else decent at a good price to hook these up to?
