Yes, that was their original design goal. Nonetheless, they can be used for HT whether in 2.0 or as part of a surround setup (though this is more troublesome with all the individual power cords needed as well as a receiver with full pre-outs). JBL does make their own soundbar/pseudo-sub combos, lol.
It would be damn near impossible to find large passive bookshelves with anything approaching these JBLs' sound quality for $150 a pop.
The JBL 308P MkII is a powered near field studio monitor that stands out for neutral, fatigue free sound and strong value at this price. It can fill a fairly large room, works well for mixing, desktop audio, and even home theater with the right setup, and the low end reaches deeper than the smaller 305P. The main tradeoffs are practical ones, since each speaker needs power, there is no HDMI or digital input, and the back panel volume control can be awkward with a TV. The cabinets also have no grills, so the tweeters and woofers need a little care.
Home studio mixers wanting accurate near-field playback, because the sound is flat, neutral, and low-fatigue for mixing.
They can work with a TV, but they are not soundbar substitutes and they have no HDMI inputs. You'll need extra connection gear and, for easy volume control, a preamp or other volume-control device; a receiver with full pre-outs can also work.
They can play full enough for many rooms on their own, with a measured low end around 43 Hz. A sub is still helpful for deeper bass and higher movie output, and the 308s are more satisfying without a sub than the smaller 305/306 models.
They are powered monitors, so each speaker needs its own power cable and they are not meant to connect straight to a cheap AVR. For desktop use they work well, but the setup is less convenient than passive speakers because you also need to manage the stereo input and volume control.
The 308P MkII reaches deeper bass and is more satisfying without a sub than the 305/306 models, with the 308s dropping off around 45 Hz versus about 60 Hz for the 305s. If you want the larger cabinet and fuller low end, the 308s are the better pick; the 306Ps are the cheaper alternative.
They sound excellent, but they have no grills and the dome tweeters and woofers can be damaged more easily than on speakers with heavy-duty protection. They are best suited to studio or careful hi-fi use rather than rough handling.
At this price point, even though these sound great I find edifier speakers or similar more convenient. If you can find them for the "good" prices like you can find refurbished on ebay (or the chinese prices which are crazy low), the convenience of bluetooth, optical, hdmi, having a remote, etc. is unbeatable
Edifier S2000 mk III refurbished is $399 and I saw them 20% off with an ebay promo code last month. That would be $320
not to mention the jbl are ugly as hell and the gloss finish is a fingerprint magnet. The ambient hissing is also really loud. I prefer the jbl as computer speakers and edifier for TV

What an easy decision. I have the 305s in my smaller studio. Just ordered a pair of these on SW for my larger room. The flat audio on these is amazing. So little fatigue. This is equal or less than I paid for my 305s several years ago.

I admit the JBLs are not exactly pretty, but lol neither are those Edifiers.
I mean, what is with the fake wood veneer and the blingy protruding grilles, oy. 🤣
The klipsch 600m measure poorly. Not sure if anybody's measured the mkii, but not reason to think they'll be better.Klipsch makes some (not all) excellent value subs and a rare good speaker, but mainly they chase cheapness and image over quality sound. Hey, it makes them successful.
Well, hello there little internet warrior. The first set up klipsch speakers I owned was a 2.1 system almost 30 years ago. I avoided them every since, until I got a RP1400 sub and some nines. The 5s and 7s are trash, but the 9s are excellent. klipsch is mostly miss with a rare hit.
I personally own quite a few Klipsch speakers. Currently have RP-8000mkIIs as my HT mains, Fives in my office, and AW-650s on my patio... so I'm not a Klipsch hater.

Well, to be fair the review you posted was for the FIRST gen RP600M. Same reviewer gave a more positive review of the 2nd gen, 600Mii here: https://www.erinsaudiocorner.com/...p_600m_ii/
The 600Mii is what ThatsUnfortunate was referring to upthread.
If you love music, I would get a pair of these and a nice 8" powered sub and an external DAC ... I love music ... this have huge sound. I have a pair of PreSonus Eris E7 XT and I love 'em. They are incredible.

The 308P MkII can deliver strong room-filling sound and can work well as desktop speakers.
The sound signature is described as flat and accurate, with low fatigue for longer listening sessions.
These monitors are designed for near-field audio mixing rather than soundbar-style TV listening.
Long-term ownership reports indicate the speakers can remain in excellent condition after years of use.
Using them with a TV can require extra connection effort because they do not include HDMI inputs.
Powered-monitor setup can be less straightforward with some AVRs because they are not designed to work directly from a cheap AVR.
The speakers lack grills, and the dome tweeters and woofers can be damaged more easily.
TV volume control can be inconvenient because the TV output is fixed volume and the back-panel knob is hard to adjust.
