Yes, that was their original design goal. Nonetheless, they can be used for HT whether in 2.0 or as part of a surround setup (though this is more troublesome with all the individual power cords needed as well as a receiver with full pre-outs). JBL does make their own soundbar/pseudo-sub combos, lol.
It would be damn near impossible to find large passive bookshelves with anything approaching these JBLs' sound quality for $150 a pop.

These aren't meant to be soundbar substitutes. These are near field monitors for audio mixing.

apparently value for money, PA speakers are good
large drivers of that size, horn tweeters, and get really loud powered off a cheap avr
Would this be appropriate for use as a stage monitor?
No you typically need much more SPL capability and overall durability.
These also have no grills so the woofers and very delicate dome tweeters can easily be damaged.
Get something with heavy duty grills and more maximum output capability.
For studio use and hifi use these are great, performing well above entry level.
These are actually quite excellent and have been Klippel NFS tested via ASR.

These definitely can be used with your large TV but they do not have HDMI inputs and in general connecting them the way you want will take some little extra efforts.
It will be worth it.
These can fill a fairly large space with very good sound. No sound bar for anywhere near $300 can come close unless you get a very slick deal on a high end sound bar.
Many user won't even require a sub though like just about any set-up movies in particular almost always benefit from a beefy sub for really deep bass and higher output.
These are excellent speakers, end stop. Of course you can spend more and get better, but dollar for dollar, I don't think anything comes close. The only downside is that, being powered, they're not designed to work straight from your cheap AVR.

I would love to justify getting these, especially for this price.
