If you have never tapped anything, the self-centering of the 14pc might be better.

Use gobs of lube (even vegetable oil), turn, the moment you feel resistance - reverse to break the chip, then turn again, reverse on resistance, and repeat.
Once in a while, you might have to spin it apart and clear out all the chips
Take your time, it's super easy and you'll get the hang of it in 5 minutes.
Store the taps lubed so they don't rust. Mineral oil or motor oil is fine.
Community Reviews
This Irwin tap and die set is mainly valued as a compact, made in USA threading kit for common repair jobs, especially cleaning up damaged threads and keeping a few essential SAE sizes on hand. The set gets credit for solid performance, with the 14 piece kit praised for durability, a good case, and practical use in home shops or occasional emergencies. The main drawbacks are the carbon steel construction, the flimsy tap handles, and the limited size coverage. Menards shipping and processing fees can also erase much of the bargain if you are not near a store.
Home mechanics fixing stripped or damaged threads, because the set covers common SAE sizes and can re-form worn threads on bolts, studs, and holes.
Buyers who want a compact starter kit for occasional emergency repairs, because the set is described as a decent, proper archive tool with a useful case and common sizes.
Small-shop fabricators working through lots of steel or fiberglass enclosure hardware, because the taps can save time when thread repair is a recurring task.
Shoppers who value a USA-made carbon-steel tap and die set, because commenters see it as a last chance to get domestic tool steel before a rumored overseas version.
Machinists who need high-end HSS performance, because the set is described as carbon steel that can dull quickly compared with industrial-grade taps.
Users who need a full-size, heavy-duty die stock, because the included die holder is described as bulky and not locking well.
People who only need a few taps and dies for rare repairs, because the 14-piece kit covers just a handful of common SAE sizes and can leave metric needs unmet.
Shoppers far from a Menards store, because shipping and processing fees can erase much of the savings.
