I have this printer also. It does a great job and is easy to use. But if you have a filament clog. God help you. This printer is not easy at all to work on.

How does this compare to the bambu a1 combo? 13 year old is begging for one but didn't really want to pony up for the a1 if I didn't have to. She has never used a 3d printer if it matters.

I have both. Since she is new I would go with the A1. I think the A1 is a little more user friendly with Makerworld integration. Also she will need to be a 3d printer mechanic, it's just part of it. The A1 is easier to work on. That being said the print quality between the two is similar. The Kobra does multi color faster and with less waste.

I bought an AD5X with the last sale to "give" to my kids as a Christmas present (it will be our first 3D printer), but I've heard it produces a lot of waste — especially with multi-color prints — and is quite slow. Mind you the AD5X is still sealed in the box (which is killing me), but would the Kobra be a substantial upgrade over the AD5X?

The AD5X is not slow. Multi color printing with a single nozzle is the slow part. If you are printing single material the AD5X is likely one of the fastest printers you can buy for under $2k. If you are doing multi color, the color changes are slow with any printer that uses a single print nozzle (most multi color printers). Some are faster but the basic way they work is slow. However, how you design your prints will impact the speed since you are waiting for the color changes, not the "printing" itself.

DavidD2824, for a 13 year old's first printer the question is what happens when it jams, not the top speed. Rockfish07 just told you this one is hard to work on. The Bambu costs more because it mostly doesn't need working on. I print all the time and I'd still pay the difference for a kid's first one.

Lots of waste, but the print quality is there. The print time is long for multi color prints because it has to change out colors frequently and that is where the time goes.

Nice deal. The print size is nice for the price for a quality 4 color single head.
