So, this camera (and it's bigger cousin the COOLPIX P1100) are....very interesting offerings. Interesting not in the best way either.

You're getting these cameras for the zoom range, period. 2000-3000mm effective zoom is mindboggling.

You'll need a tripod -- probably one with a geared 3-way head, because even minor movements will radically change framing. And you'll need the brightest of days to shoot, because these cameras are awful at higher ISOs -- folks mention that anything above ISO 400 starts to get ugly.

Compare that to the Canon R8 Mark I (a compact Full Frame camera body), where you can get very usable results all the way up to ISO 25,600.

These aren't modernized point and shoots with a super lens -- they're around 7-8 year old tech that's had a VERY mild facelift (mostly to comply with newer EU laws). AF struggles at the long end of the zoom, as expected.

These refurb prices are slightly better than used, which isn't bad at all given the current economy.

I suppose if you're in the market for such a camera/lens combo, you already know what you're looking at and are willing to deal with the tradeoffs and compromises. If you're just seeing these for the first time, I'd say hold off -- you might find better uses for your hard earned dollerydoos.

I have an Olympus TG7 with the same 1/2.3" size sensor. I'm getting rid of it cause you get lots of great shots but they're just a smudgy mess and only look good on a phone. And don't turn the phone sideways.

Noise is not a big issue if you shoot RAW and do AI noise reduction. But there's just no detail due to the tiny sensor.
