This MacBook Pro 14 inch M5 Max deal stands out for strong performance in standard development and fast memory bandwidth, with 36GB RAM and 2TB storage at a lower price than Apple Education pricing. The current price also compares favorably with older MacBook Pro launches and the same configuration at Best Buy. The main caveat is that local AI and large language model work pushes toward more memory, and several comments point to better value in 48GB or 64GB configurations. OLED and the next Apple announcement are also worth waiting for if display upgrades matter.

  • Buyers needing a 2TB MacBook Pro now, because this configuration is priced below the Apple Education Store and is still viewed as reasonable versus older pricing.

  • Software developers doing standard coding work, because 36GB RAM is enough for everyday development.

  • People who need a fast local-LLM machine, because the Max chip's memory bandwidth can make model runs faster when the model fits in memory.

  • People building local AI or local LLM workflows, because 36GB RAM can be too little and even 64GB may still fall short.

  • Buyers who can wait for the next generation, because a new model is expected soon and this configuration was cheaper before the price hike.

  • Shoppers waiting for a better display, because OLED is the upgrade worth holding out for.

Component prices are whack right now, as is the sticker price on this laptop. They're going to end up sitting on so much stock that prices are going to reach an equilibrium.

36GB RAM is good for standard dev work. Wait for OLED for better display.

Skip this model for local AI. A 128GB MacBook Pro was able to finish my small project using NVIDIA's model (released yesterday), after several corrections, and follow-up prompts. Google Argon solved the project in one prompt.

For any ai work, you will end up chaining RDMA. Ultimately, go with a system that has more memory.

$800 off sticker. For reference, in 2021 a M1 Max 14" MBP with 32 core GPU, 64 gb of ram and 1 TB SSD was $3699.

Yeah ram prices are out of whack, but by comparison this ain't bad.

But did you realize that this exact Max config was $500 cheaper before the hike? That was the MSRP, not to mention any deals. Unless someone absolutely needs it right now, there's little justification to pull the trigger.

Seems like general consensus is wait for the Apple announcement rumored later this month. OLED would be worth waiting for.

If you code everyday without enterprise paid token for subscription AI, it costs $1000+ per month for each person. Company restrict using token even Microsoft.

You can buy PC laptops with 64GB of ram for about a third the price of this. Apple has always severely overcharged for RAM/SSD upgrades (years before the rampocalypse). With the new price hikes it's just way too much money. Nothing slick about this "deal". My $0.02.

Like paying the pre-get bent MSRP ... If you must, then you must... More of a dire need over a want right now.

Not the worst... But, more like luke-warm imo
