This MacBook Pro 14 inch M5 Max deal stands out for strong performance in standard development and fast memory bandwidth, with 36GB RAM and 2TB storage at a lower price than Apple Education pricing. The current price also compares favorably with older MacBook Pro launches and the same configuration at Best Buy. The main caveat is that local AI and large language model work pushes toward more memory, and several comments point to better value in 48GB or 64GB configurations. OLED and the next Apple announcement are also worth waiting for if display upgrades matter.
Common Questions (4)
It is not a strong choice for local AI or local LLMs because 36GB can be limiting and more memory is the bigger priority. For AI work, a higher-RAM configuration is the better fit, and even 64GB is described as not enough for local LLM use.
The price is lower than Apple Education pricing for the same configuration, which is listed at $3,799. It is also described as about $800 off the sticker price, though some alternatives with more RAM or lower prices at other retailers may be better value depending on your needs.
Waiting is recommended if you do not need a laptop immediately, because an Apple announcement is rumored later this month and OLED is expected to be the bigger upgrade. The current model is still considered fine if you need it now, but the next generation may be more compelling.
36GB RAM is enough for standard development work. It is a reasonable fit for everyday coding and general dev tasks, but it is not the preferred choice if you want headroom for heavier local AI workloads.

This is way at the top of what I could manage. There are some deals closer to $2k going on that are worth checking out. Ignore the haters these are amazing and satisfying machines that let you keep on working and not twiddling with the knobs

It's just a world of trade-offs. The max chip has better memory bandwidth so your model runs faster, but if you have less memory you can't load as large of models.
I really struggled to find any option for any configuration anywhere with more than 48gb ram under 3k, so I feel like I did great at only 2500
