$800 off sticker. For reference, in 2021 a M1 Max 14" MBP with 32 core GPU, 64 gb of ram and 1 TB SSD was $3699.

Yeah ram prices are out of whack, but by comparison this ain't bad.

This MacBook Pro 14 inch M5 Max deal stands out for strong performance in standard development and fast memory bandwidth, with 36GB RAM and 2TB storage at a lower price than Apple Education pricing. The current price also compares favorably with older MacBook Pro launches and the same configuration at Best Buy. The main caveat is that local AI and large language model work pushes toward more memory, and several comments point to better value in 48GB or 64GB configurations. OLED and the next Apple announcement are also worth waiting for if display upgrades matter.

  • The 36GB RAM configuration can work well for standard development tasks.

    PurpleRoom4389

  • The deal price is reportedly available at Best Buy as well.

    Groot81

  • The $800-off pricing is framed as reasonable compared with earlier 2021 MacBook Pro pricing.

    oopsz

  • A 48GB RAM alternative at Micro Center is described as a better value depending on local LLM goals.

    SensibleGorilla6965

  • The configuration may be a poor fit for local AI workloads that require more memory.

    PurpleRoom4389

  • Local LLM use may require more than 64GB RAM, making this configuration potentially insufficient.

    metaclass

  • Apple RAM and SSD upgrades are criticized as overpriced, especially after recent price hikes.

    btljuice

  • Buying now may be hard to justify because the same configuration was reportedly $500 cheaper before a price hike.

For any ai work, you will end up chaining RDMA. Ultimately, go with a system that has more memory.

Microceneter has the 48GB RAM/1TB SSD version for $2499.99 and the 48GB RAM/2TB SSD for $2999.99 for "plain old boring retina"

That's for the pro cpu, not the max.

36GB RAM is good for standard dev work. Wait for OLED for better display.Skip for local AI. Even a 128GB MacBook Pro couldn't load models good enough for my simple project. 256GB+ Mac Studios are expensive.Google Argon just solved my issue (included in Drive plan).
Stop spreading false information. If you can't get your "simple project" done with m5 pro and 128gb you clearly have no idea how to run local AI.

You can buy PC laptops with 64GB of ram for about a third the price of this. Apple has always severely overcharged for RAM/SSD upgrades (years before the rampocalypse). With the new price hikes it's just way too much money. Nothing slick about this "deal". My $0.02.
please show us an example the this.

This config is 3799$ on the Apple Edu Store. I guess if you need one, this is the way to go, but new gen will be announced in short time. I'm on a M3Max and not compelled to upgrade to M5.

Seems like general consensus is wait for the Apple announcement rumored later this month. OLED would be worth waiting for.
Why? The current mini LED screens are crazy damn good and less or no burn in problems.

I want this just cant even come close to affording it.
If you can save your dollars and get one of these every few years it's a good way to go. Last I calculated my MacBook cost $15 month in depreciation. Granted you have to start with some capital but Macs are well understood units is value that you can buy and sell.
This is way at the top of what I could manage. There are some deals closer to $2k going on that are worth checking out. Ignore the haters these are amazing and satisfying machines that let you keep on working and not twiddling with the knobs

I jumped on the 48gb at microcenter. That's a way better deal than this one IMO but depends on you're use case. I wanted the extra memory as it was arguably more beneficial for playing with local llms than a max chip.
It's just a world of trade-offs. The max chip has better memory bandwidth so your model runs faster, but if you have less memory you can't load as large of models.
I really struggled to find any option for any configuration anywhere with more than 48gb ram under 3k, so I feel like I did great at only 2500

This was exactly my line of thought too - more memory seemed to be better than more GPUs. YMMV. And for $2500, I feel this microcenter deal is perfect balance between CPU/GPU/RAM/SSD.
