A Godet is a triangular or flared piece of extra fabric that is sewn into the hem of a skirt, dress, or bottom of pants. Sometimes they are made from the exact same fabric as the rest of the dress, and sometimes they are made from a contrasting fabric (like sheer mesh or lace) for a peek-a-boo effect! What is the difference between a Gore and a Godet? The gore is a tapered panel spanning the full length of a skirt (e.g., waist to hem) to create shape, while a Godet is a triangular piece inserted into a seam or slit to add concentrated flare and volume often at the hem. Walmart recommends a Godet for a fluid, fluttery finish and a Godet keeps the bulk away from the midsection for a smooth fitting look. How does a Godets flatter? The Godet is a total design magic trick because it gives you the best of both worlds: a fitted shape and dramatic volume. Because the extra fabric is only added at the bottom, the Godet offers a gorgeous, fluted shape that perfectly balances your proportions.
