Red Star active dry yeast is a strong value for frequent bakers, with enough quantity to keep on hand for a long time. Proper storage in the fridge or freezer can keep dry yeast usable for years, and the comments include examples of it still performing well after two and a half years and even longer. The main drawback is the size of the pack, which can be more than casual bakers need, and active dry yeast also requires proofing before use. Comparable yeast has been seen cheaper elsewhere, so the deal is best judged against how much you will actually use.

Common Questions (3)

  • Stored airtight, active dry or instant yeast can last 1-2 years, and often longer in the freezer. Keeping one pack in the fridge and one in the freezer has kept it usable for years, though it can eventually lose rising power after a long time.

  • The 2-pack is a strong deal, but the quantity is large enough that many home bakers may not use it all before it ages. A single pack is also available for $7.59, and similar yeast has been seen for about $7 at Sam's Club or Costco.

  • Yes. Active dry yeast needs to be proofed or activated before use, unlike instant dry yeast, which can be added without that extra step.

Insanely good deal, but an insane amount of yeast. Unless you're baking professionally or baking for a huge family all the time you'll probably need to give some away before it starts to go bad

Dry yeast (active dry or instant) can last 1 to 2 years (or even longer, up to several years) in the freezer if kept in an airtight container.

This is an instant yeast but only one pound if you don't need two. Yeast lasts a long time in the freezer though. Just finishing up a pound from over 6 years ago and it still works very well.

It can eventually stop raising as well, but it takes years if you store it properly.

Yes. Better deal for a more potent form of yeast. Still have half a pack on my freezer purchased 2½ years ago. Still works totally fine. Just baked over 3 pounds of buns with less than 1½ teaspoons(over night retard in refrigerator).

I tried freezing mine and I couldn't get it to activate. Looked dead after testing.

Keep it in the fridge or freezer and it'll be perfectly fine. Bought a 2 pack at Sam's during the pandemic and I'm just finishing up the first one (granted, I admittedly don't do a ton of yeast baking).....kept the one I'm using in the fridge and the other one has been in the freezer waiting its turn.

Recommend just getting instant yeast over active dry yeast as you can skip the activation part and save time
