$289.99 shipped as a pre-order option. At least that is $10 off the ridiculous price!

Totally expected. Most people should get the 2nd gen or 3rd gen - if you like this product. When purchasing this one, ask yourself this:
- How much do you value having a "clean" interface (by this I mean, no ads on the home screen, or otherwise no ads in your face).
- Privacy considerations - or atleast better the competition. This unit doesn't allow apps to harvest data in your other apps, or what you are watching. Doesn't send data to advertisers or apple.
- Performance. This chip is genuinely powerful, you can compare this to the macbook air M1 era. It has the same chip & wireless networking from an iPhone 17 (A19 chip). That's no slouch. Might even be suitable for gaming (if apple ever becomes serious and actually offers good games).
Downsides:
- Price
- Remote is small, and easy to lose (although does have find my)
- NO hdmi audio passthrough (so high end audiophiles and high end theaters, should still look at nvidia shield). But if you just have a soundbar, this is plenty good. If you have your own bluray rips, and care about audio being good, skip this.
SKIP: If you already have a 2nd or 3rd gen, and don't care of the specific features (like find my remote, or siri microphones in the unit).
Also, from apple's history, this unit will be for sale for a while, the last couple of refreshes went almost 3 years in between updates. And the price is crazy because of the RAM apocalypse due to AI, but also apple does have pricing power here - there is no competing product that checks all the boxes above. Fire TV, android TV are loaded with ads, and nvidia shield is like 7 year old hardware, and is also selling for $299 now.
